*On this day in 1942, Huey Percy Newton was born in Monroe, La. He would go on to become one of the two founders of an empowering black organization that would be called the The Black Panther Party for Self Defense, usually shortened to The Black Panthers.
With his friend Bobby Seale, who he met at Merritt college, they would head one of the leading community activist organizations in the country.
The Black Panthers were advocates of health with a well known breakfast program for children. According to Biography.com, ” They set forth their political goals in a document called the Ten-Point Program, which included better housing, jobs, and education for African Americans. It also called for an end to economic exploitation of black communities.”
