*At the risk of dislocating a shoulder by patting myself on the back, I must say I was right … again! Last year (May 28, 2009), I penned a commentary in which I went out on a limb and declared that all the sensational reports about the potential devastating impact of swine flu (later renamed H1N1) on the world’s population were exaggerations designed to scare people for either profit or evil.

Specifically, I wrote, “Not since the completely bogus fears that the year 2000 would cause all computers to crash and airplanes to fall out of the sky has there been such an orchestrated campaign of much ado about very little.”

Well, last week, much of the establishment media began to challenge the World Health Organization (WHO) suggesting that it had been unduly influenced by big drug companies (seeking to make big profits with a swine flu vaccine) into exaggerating the dangers of the H1N1 flu virus. WHO officials have denied the allegation.

However, the fact is that the so-called H1N1 “pandemic” has been no where as devastating as originally suggested and that the overwhelming majority of people affected have had mild cases with most not even requiring hospital treatment.

It was relatively easy to predict that swine flu would not be the killer that most of the “experts” and media were suggesting because the reporting had the key elements of a propaganda campaign: An exaggerated fear, little or no hard evidence to support the fear, prevention of opposing views from being heard and constant repetition. Just as in the cases of the year 2000 stories and former President Bush’s claim that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq – there was no hard evidence to support the fear that was being pushed.

This is how to best determine that you are being lied to. The propagandists rely on a lot of fear but few facts. They want you to react based on emotion usually fear) and not rational thought which requires some degree of evidence.

Generally, when you encounter a fear-based news story accompanied by little or no hard evidence, someone is either trying to scare you into doing something contrary to your best interest or is trying to make a quick profit. Clearly, the big drug companies stood to profit by convincing WHO to declare H1N1 a pandemic.

Clearly, the computer industry stood to benefit by convincing the world to add unnecessary protections to their computer systems in advance of the year 2000. Clearly, Bush had evil intent when he convinced you (without any hard evidence) that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction that could be used against the U.S.

As for the future, here are the current events which are being exaggerated for profit or for evil:

  • Human Caused Global Warming – There maybe some warming but there is virtually no hard evidence that human activity is the cause.
  • AIDS is wiping out the Black community – HIV/AIDS reached its height in Black America in the mid-1990s. With the exception of young Black gay males, HIV/AIDS infection has been declining in every segment of the Black America for over 10 years.
  • Iran is trying to build a nuclear weapon in order to threaten the U.S. and the world – No one, from the United Nation’s IAEA to Israel to the United States – has produced any concrete evidence that Iran’s nuclear program is for anything other than the peaceful production of nuclear energy.
