*A recently released study appears to suggest that some health care providers may be intentionally shortchanging African Americans when it comes to prescribing the most advanced health treatments.
Specifically, in the Veterans Affairs health system where everyone is suppose to have equal access to care, it was discovered that Blacks are less likely than their white counterparts to be prescribed heart-protecting medications and treatments.
The findings are based on data from nearly 475,000 Veteran Affairs patients and were published in the American Journal of Cardiology.
The data showed that Blacks had lower rates of prescriptions for cholesterol-lowering statins, as well as ACE inhibitors and beta blockers which are used to treat high blood pressure and some heart problems. (source: Taylor Media Services – www.blacknewsjournal.net)
