*According to an analysis of Census Bureau data conducted by researchers at the University of New Hampshire, 2010 is on track to become the “tipping point” year when babies born to Black, Hispanic and Asian American women outnumber those born to white women.
The analysis also confirmed previous projections that whites will become a minority in America by 2050.
However, the bulk of the change in the nation’s complexion will come from Hispanics who are having babies at a much faster pace than whites, Blacks or Asian Americans. Currently, Minorities made up 48 per cent of US children born in 2008, compared to 37 per cent in 1990.
Broken down by race, about 52 per cent of babies born in 2008 were white, compared to about 25 per cent who were Hispanic, 15 per cent Black and four per cent Asian. Another four per cent were identified by their parents as multiracial.
