*Mike Tyson’s new reality show about pigeon racing is a full year away, but PETA is already asking New York City prosecutors to look into the series, claiming it’s cruel to animals and its races could involve illegal gambling.
The Animal Planet series, based in Brooklyn, will follow Tyson as he competes in varius pigeon races. The former world heavyweight champion has raised pigeons all his life but has never had them compete.
PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) sent a letter dated March 18 to the Brooklyn district attorney’s office requesting an investigation. District attorney spokesman Jonah Bruno says the office is looking into the allegations, according to the Associated Press.
A spokeswoman says the show has no intent to have folks betting on the races, the AP reported. She says the pigeons will be “cherished and respected by their owners,” including Tyson.
