*The fire that prevented Lil Wayne from beginning his jail sentence for a second and third time was caused by faulty electrical wiring that has no link to the rapper, as some in the blogosphere facetiously suspected.
According to the New York City Fire Department, the blaze at the Manhattan Criminal Court building was caused by “electrical wiring for temporary construction lighting in the basement.”
Wayne was scheduled to be sentenced to a one-year prison term for attempted possession of a weapon, after he pleaded guilty to the gun charge in October.
Judge Charles H. Solomon was supposed to sentence the rapper to prison on Feb. 9, but he postponed the sentencing so Lil Wayne could have dental work done. The sentence date was rescheduled for March 2, but the fire forced the courthouse to shut down for the day. Over 1,000 people were forced to evacuate and eight people, including five firefighters were treated for injuries.
Lil Wayne is now scheduled to be sentenced on Monday (March 8).
In the meantime, Lil Wayne made use of his borrowed time by joining Jay-Z at Madison Square Garden last night as part of the rapper’s Blueprint 3 tour. [View clip below.]
While guest stars Jeezy asked Nicki Minaj were on stage, the beat for “I’m Goin’ In” dropped and Lil Wayne emerged from a mini stage where Jay-Z’s Roc Boys band was playing and jumped onto the main stage. The surprise appearance set the concertgoers into a frenzy.
Drake then emerged wearing all white — unlike the rest of the performers who wore all black — and performed his verse to the charting track. Jeezy closed the song out with his verse, and all three men chanted the chorus in unison: “I’m goin’ in, I’m goin’ in, and I’mma go hard!”
“Jeezy, you a real n*gga,” Wayne said before walking off stage. “We with you 100 percent,” Jeezy replied.
