*Carolyn M. Rodgers was a groundbreaking poet who gave focus to the issues of African American identity and culture in her work.  Her poems were central to the Black Arts Movement of the late 1960s.  According to the Los Angeles Times, her sister, Nina R. Gordon, told the paper she died of cancer in early April at the age of 69.  She was in hospice care at Mercy Hospital in Chicago.  (more…)
