*It started out as a program to help Black students close the educational achievement gap with whites.
But the Ann Arbor, Michigan’s Dicken Elementary school generated national controversy recently when a group of Black students was taken on a field trip which excluded white and other students.
Well, last week School Board President Deb Mexicotte declared the “Lunch Bunch” program was “well-intentioned” but violated the district’s anti-discrimination policy.
About 30 Black students had been taken to the University of Michigan propulsion lab to meet with its director Alec Gallimore – an African American rocket scientist.
The apparent aim was to show the Black students a Black role model of academic success.
But the exclusion of white students generated a firestorm which became a national controversy. The program has since been disbanded. (source: Taylor Media Services)
