*Hip-hop legend and entrepreneur Russell Simmons is at it again, with a new project underway. He is bringing his latest show, “Stand-Up at the El Rey,” to Comedy Central this summer (July 11).
He calls it a “hip-hop show with a stand-up vibe.” Comedian JB Smoove, who is known for his stomach stitching humor on “Curb You Enthusiasm” and “Saturday Night Live”, will host the show.
The venture is a joint effort with Simmons’ longtime business partner, Stan Lathan. Through their company Simmons-Lathan Media Group, the pair has created some of the most successful shows including “Def Comedy Jam,” “Def Poetry Jam,” and MTV’s “Run’s House.”
“We have to understand hip-hop as a cultural movement,” Simmons said in a statement on the company’s website. “Beyond just music, and as a generation of multicultural young people that have been influenced by pop culture of the 70s and 80s, but through technology and diversity have evolved into a singularly unique generation that values each person is individuality, while at the same time being comfortable remaining connected to a larger emotional community.”
