*R&B star Usher was honored in Detroit Thursday for his work as an entrepreneur and for the efforts of his youth mentoring program, New Look Foundation.

The singer, who just scored his record-breaking ninth No. 1 hit on Billboard, has been named the Ford Freedom Award Scholar, given annually since 1999 by the Ford Motor Co. and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

“Something inside of me wanted to mentor youth, like myself. Kids who were maybe not as likely to succeed,” said Usher before Thursday’s 12th annual Ford Freedom Award program.

In addition to mentoring kids and enjoying a successful music career, the 31-year-old is part owner of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers.
