Serena Williams plays a backhand during her quarterfinal match with Samantha Stosur of Australia at the French Open, June 2, 2010.

Top-ranked Serena lost in the quarterfinals Wednesday after squandering a match point and losing to Australian spoiler Samantha Stosur 6-2, 6-7 (2), 8-6.

Williams, a 12-time Grand Slam champion, won her lone French Open title in 2002 and hasn’t been to the semifinals since 2003.

“I guess it’s a redundant story with me,” Serena told reporters after today’s defeat. “It was my match, and I lost it.”

It was Williams’ first Grand Slam loss since cursing out a line judge in the semifinals of the U.S. Open last September against Kim Clijsters. This time she directed any anger only at herself — and her shoes. Early on, she knocked dirt from her sneakers by angrily whacking them with her racket.

Williams hit 13 aces but also nine double-faults and committed 46 unforced errors to 24 for Stosur.

Venus Williams and her nude color shorts were ousted in the quarterfinal round late last week with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to No. 19 Nadia Petrova.
