*A racial controversy erupted last week when a number of photos featuring supermodel Claudia Schiffer emerged showing her with an artificially darkened face and wearing an Afro wig. Critics are calling it an indefensible blackface photo shoot.
The term “blackface” refers the practice from 1900 to roughly 1950 when white performers would blacken their faces and paint their lips white in a bid to make fun of Blacks.
The photos were shot by Karl Lagerfeld for a Dom Perignon ad campaign which was never released. Spokespersons for Schiffer and others involved have defended the photos saying they were intended to “represent every man’s fantasy” and no negative intentions were involved.
What do you think? Does the principle photograph negatively stereotype Black women or are the critics being a bit too sensitive.
