*The California chapter of the NAACP last week threw its support behind a November ballot initiative which would legalize the recreational use of marijuana and allow state residents over 21 to grow and cultivate small plots of the drug.

State NAACP head Alice Huffman issued a statement saying the civil rights organization is backing Proposition 19 to combat marijuana arrest practices which “unfairly target African Americans.”

According to Huffman and many civil and human rights groups, law enforcement agencies unfairly target minorities, especially young Black men, for drug arrests.

Indeed, the state NAACP’s endorsement of Proposition 19 was timed to coincide with last week’s release of a study from the  Drug Policy Alliance, a group seeking alternatives to the so-called war on drugs. (Taylor Media Services)
