*It made news last week when Senate Republicans rallied to defeat an effort by President Obama and Democratic Party leaders to extend weekly unemployment benefits to millions of out-of-work Americans.
The measure would have extended benefits for people who have been out of work for more than six months. However, what did not get as much media coverage was the fact the defeated lesgilative package also denied over a billion dollars in aid to Black farmers.
The Black farmers had negotiated a deal with the Obama administration’s Agriculture Department in which African American farmers would have received well over $1 billion to compensate them for past governmental discrimination. But the agreement had to be funded by Congress.
The denial of funds may now force the Black farmers to go to federal court to seek the funds via a lawsuit. (Taylor Media Services)
