  7. HersheysKiss says:

    Hey Happy People!

I’ve got a scenario and I apologize in advance for the length.

My neice who I absolutely adore, is such a white girl. I don’t care that she has white friends or even dates Opie. It’s that she spends the majority of her time/life with white people. To the point that she rarely associates with blacks. Her FB page is plastered w/ white people. She has a few black friends but her college life is consumed by a white social life. She’s constantly messing up her hair to have it look straight and now it’s breaking off and damaged. My sister, brother (her dad) and I have offered to have her done consistently. I even had my Soror call her and offer to take her to the salon on a regular basis while she’s at school. She called my neice at least 3-4 times. My neice never returned her call. My mother is furious w/ me b/c I won’t contact my Soror again. I can’t do that. Why should this grown woman put herself out for someone who’s not her relative? Solely cuz she’s my Soror? PASS!! Her mother? Well she’s excessively hands off and doing her own thing being overly religious. Often takes the whatever, it’s her life approach. And since she’s no longer married to my brother, will never agree w/ my brother. My neice and I are close (I’m the cool/hip aunt) but when she doesn’t follow thru or looks a hot mess and says that people shouldn’t care about her appearance I feel like strangling her. It’s ridiculous. I said, ask a black student on campus about her hair. She says who does that. You can do that? Well you sure can’t ask a white girl about it. WTH??? :x And b4 any of you ask, she is not in a remote part of the country. She’s in a college in one of america’s black hair capitals and should be on point ALL THE TIME!!

  8. HK – I knew chicks like that in high school & college. I’ve even gone so far as to reach out and try to give them my stylist’s card but they always take offense (even though I do it really nice and gentle). I think to some people, their personal appearance is the last thing on their minds.
I kinda take the approach of “well F it then… look a hot sizzling mess if you want to”. BUT, since she’s your niece, maybe you could try another heart-to-heart. Go visit her (if you can) and spend a weekend doing fun stuff. Let her know how much more fabulous she could be if she put a little effort into it. Her heart & ideals won’t change but her outward appearance should reflect all the good stuff inside her.

  9. Jazz thanks for the info. If I was anywhere near the area I would attend despite my dislike of the book.

  10. HersheysKiss says:

And for the record, for those of you that watched that Blacks in America documentary and there was a part about this prinicipal Steve Perry. He’s a complete and utter azz. He’s a self-absorbed, egotistical condescending azz who thinks he knows more than everyone else. His story is full of crap. Don’t believe the hype. TRUST!

  11. HersheysKiss says:

Thanks Lovely. I appreciate your response. It’s just frustrating b/c she’s such a pretty girl with a gorgeous athletic figure. She often says, her b/f doesn’t care what she looks like. I respond w/ well you should care what his friends think about his g/f b/c when you’re out you represent him (and me–and you know I don’t play that nonsense) LOL
I even talked to her about her attempt to get a job with her hair looking like this all to no avail.

  12. OJ! You didn’t like it? That book made me look at slavery from an angle I’d never even considered and I appreciated the perspective even though I hated her mentality and how he treated her.
    Why didn’t you like it?

  13. Wow, saddens me to hear that. I definitely saw the part about him on Blacks in America 2 and was impressed. It seems like he is sending many of our kids to college. Maybe we can separate his accomplishments from his personality?

    • HersheysKiss says:

Yes he has a 100% h.s. grad rate, but doesn’t track their success after that. And he’s had NO growth in the last year with this school. He’s has ostracized himself b/c his attitude is the worst. There are other things I would never disclose. Not my style. I will only stick to the stuff about his personality and the school. Thanks. I wish his students well.

  14. Good morning family. What it do?

  15. HK – try to approach it from the standpoint of health. Even if she wants to just wear it in a ponytail, that ponytail should be healthy. It’s not hard to take care of hair and the least she could do is keep her ends trimmed and keep it conditioned & clean.

Maybe she’s so used to her white friends and their wash & go lifestyle that she doesn’t think she has time. It literally takes me 45 seconds to deal with my hair in the mornings (unwrap it and go) — she could have that easy lifestyle if she wanted it.
What city is she in? I have friends all over and I’m sure they can all refer her to a stylist.

  16. Soror maybe you can convince her to cut off the damage and get a Sew in weave as protective styling agile achieving the straght hair she is searching for. Tell her it is convenient and willl give her hair a rest.

  17. And you’re right to point out her appearance when she goes to get a job. I did most of the interviewing at my last job and personal appearance can get you the thumbs down before I even hear one word out of your mouth or look at your resume. The office was a professional atmosphere and when we have vendors, agents, clients, etc in the office, YOU are the face of the company.
PLUS, I tend to not like unkempt people so I didn’t want to see you in the office (no matter how smart, how nice you are).

I bet her white friends take care of their hair. EVERYBODY has to at least do the basics.

  18. Love I didn’t like the structure of the book. I thought there were a lot of loose ends. Events happened abruptly with little development. My biggest gripe is with how the book ended abruptly. It was okay and I realize it is her first book, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

  19. And about her having so many white friends. Maybe she feels more comfortable with white folks because she might think she doesn’t fit in with the black ones. That’s sad and I don’t really know how to fix that.

  20. OJ – there WERE loose ends but I figured maybe she was going to write a sequel.
OR, maybe she was trying to emphasize that ‘relationships’ like that didn’t have a real ‘ending’. I’ono.
Of the 10-15 of us who read it, only one girl didn’t like it (for the same reasons you stated).

  21. Do I smell sex scandal?

  22. HersheysKiss says:

Thanks LoveTrain and Soror J. I just needed to vent. That’s my first baby and she’s hurting herself more than helping. I sense some self loathing here but that’s too long to get into. I’m planning a trip down this fall. Ooooh what to wear. I’ve got to start working on my outfit.

  23. I also felt Drayle’s relationship with Lizzie was unrealistic. I wasn’t around during slavery but that relationship was awfully loving. I Mean yes it was fked up but it was too “nice”. I think she had to bring this book to a close and sacrificed somethings. I felt she summed up Maeu as an afterthought st the end.

  24. Me too Soror but I didn’t want to go there. As frustrating as 25/20s are, they can also be very accepting sometimes. We (blacks) collectively dont appreciate people who deviate from what we deem ad acceptable and the norm. Black people ate very hard and critical of each other. We often push people to the other side.

  25. OJ – but she described Drayle as not being like a typical slave owner. He wasn’t from a slave owning family, he married into one and because of that, he gave his slaves certain privileges and freedoms. It’s not out of the realm of reasoning to think something like this could have actually happened.
His wife was a total b*tch and I think that was because of her entitled upbringing.

O-well :-) that’s what I love about novels — everybody can interpret them the way they want.

  26. White folks are accepting TO A POINT. Let her ‘step out of line’ and they’ll let her know what they REALLY think of her.
You see how white folks used to worship Tiger and then as soon as he messed up, they all turned on him.

I have tons of white folks and some that I even love dearly and would do anything in the world for, but there’s absolutely nothing like my straight up, ride or die, black bffs. There’s an honesty & openness that I’ve never achieved with any of my white friends (even though I’ve tried).

  27. Valid point. But I realized he was a crazy mofo when he continued to stand there and savor his cigar as that little white giirl was burning up. I was thinking this mofo. But to my original point I think she over romanticized their relationship but hey this is fiction she can do what she wants.

  28. Love very true but I meant accepting about being weird, different, straying from the norm. They are the inventors of being weird. Finding a weird azz 25/20 to bond with is easier than finding a black one.

  29. OJ – I don’t remember that part… it’s been a few months since I read it and I’ve read a couple other books since then.

I was supposed to read “The Help” and we were all going to discuss it but I didn’t want to read another slavery book. I’m waiting to see what we’re reading next.

  30. Lovely The Help was good even though it was written by a southern white woman. It is about black maids in the 60s in Mississippi.

I think someone black helped her and didn’t get any recognition. They are adapting that book for a movie.

  31. Have a great day all!

Why the paucity of comments today? I could read them all today. Broken site?

Hey HK, she needs to know that if she wants to look as good as her friends, regardless of skin color, bad, broken, unkempt hair wont help. Good skin care and well-maintained hair goes a long way. Boyfriend may not care while he is ‘boyfriend’ and in college, but transitioning to the corporate world could be a different story. Time for a woman who cares about how she looks and how he looks. The thinking might be: If she doesn’t care for and about what has always been and will always be hers, would she care how he looks when it’s not certain he’ll always be hers.

  32. OJ, for real? I feel bad now. I assumed it was another slave book and I just wasn’t in the mood so I never bought it.

My great-grandmother’s father was a sharecropper in TX and when my great-grandmother moved here, she worked her entire adult life as ‘the help’ for this super rich old white woman and she actually enjoyed it. They were like really good friends and used to do everything together. I guess she was more of a companion than a housekeeper because when my greatgrandmother got older, she hired a housekeeper to do the hard stuff.
I used to always ask her if she didn’t want to do something different (my greatgrandfather on my mom’s side owned a hotel and would have easily given her a job or something) but she always said how much she enjoyed it. Her husband (my greatgrandfather) used to drop her off on his way to work and then he would stop and pick her up.
I used to not like to tell my friends what she did but she once told me there’s nothing wrong with someone doing an honest job for honest pay.

OK, wow… tears are STREAMING down my face… I miss my greatgrandma.

  33. *ok… didn’t mean to put a damper on the board*

Anybody have any good spooge lately?
Try anything new? Screw an old boo? Take it up the wa-zoo?

  34. HersheysKiss says:

Excellent Point IndieBiz. Believe I have talked till I’m blue in the face. I’m praying she catches a clue and soon. She’s about to be a junior. I need to get down there soon. I used tohave that who cares opinion about my appearance. Then I realized, I wanted to be viewed differently and the amount of attention I got afterwards was worth every dime and ounce of effort.

ITA w/ Love– Black people will love you till the wheels fall off. Even if you’re dead wrong. But we can e awfully cruel when we want to be. I’m also concerned about her getting into trouble with white people and if cops get called, whites will run like roaches when the lights go on. Blacks will grab your ass and keep running, making sure you don’t fall. She;’s lucky she as a family that will ride or die for her. Yeah it’s time her ethnic aunt makes an appearance. Should I wear my dashiki and afro puff wig??? Or should I go like I normally dress. LOL

  35. HK – my cousin texted back and told me her friend did her hair when she lived there.

  36. 2nd text: and I went home for chemical treatments & trims.

  37. Sorry she was no help!!

Hersh, I’m sorry to hear about your niece. Continue to encourage her… I do notice that black chickks who hang out with white girls always look tore up. Maybe they think their hair requires the same amount of maintenance. WRONG ANSWER…

  47. LHM – what are you gonna do if somebody farts on the bus?

  48. crookedlettereye says:

Out to lunch…hitting the gym up…bbl

  49. LawdHvMrcy says:

HUSHUP LOVE! LOL. It is a 6 passenger Chrystler van. It is actually really nice I’m in the back row…

If somebody farts I am going to lose my job today.

  50. Meanwhile, in “other people’s” news:

Bristol Palin will cha-cha-cha from her recent breakup with Levi Johnston by hitting the dance floor. Sarah Palin’s 19-year-old daughter has officially been cast on the 11th season of ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ E! News is reporting and sources confirm to PopEater.

Although she has never danced before, Palin is looking forward to living in L.A. when the show tapes and will have her son Tripp with her, sources at ABC tells PopEater’s Naughty But Nice Rob. Her proud mama plans to be sitting in the front row cheering on her daughter as Bristol tangos her way to a victory.

“Bristol is excited and scared and hopes she gets Maksim Chmerkovskiy as her partner,” the source adds.

Last season, he and Erin Andrews turned up the heat on (and off) the dance floor — but the brash dancer still hasn’t taken a star to the top to win a mirror-ball trophy.

According to E! News, David Hasselhoff, Audrina Patridge, The Situation and Brandy have all been cast on the upcoming season, set to premiere Sept. 20.

  51. DWTS has finally run out of c-listers and they’ve moved on to D-listers. (minus Brandy, she’s still C-list).
    Bristol Palin SUCKS.

LHM – In all the years I worked for Chrysler, I never rode in one of the vans. Our office cars were 300 C’s, then 300 M’s and then Dodge Magnums. I had a company car and it was always a Jeep. Before that I had a Sebring that I bought as soon as my employee discount kicked in.

Wait, I think we had a couple of rentals when we went on family vaca’s with the man’s parents but I wanna say they were Dodge Caravans.
On behalf of the company that kicked me out the door but gave me a fat severance package: I hope you enjoy your ride/drive!!

  52. HersheysKiss says:

I don’t understand why Bristol is Public Service Announcement much less television worthy. Why is she getting this much attention? When will hr 3 min of fame end?? This family is as useful as a sweaty armpit. I can no longer listen to any more nonsense about these people. Don’t cha know.

  53. I wonder what I could do to get my lil 15 min… I’ve never really craved that but if Bristol can get it, I KNOW I can get it.

  54. Right Lovely!! I want to be a starr-ruh!!!

  55. Yes, yes, yes and yes. That is all.

  56. HK…I think your niece has deeper issues affecting how she cares for herself. Until she faces those, talking to her about her hair is like pissing in the wind and will probably just make her more determined NOT to do anything with it.

The best angle is to use is the one about future employment.

  57. What is do my people? Just drank a LARGE cup of non decaf coffee with about a 1/2 cup of sugar and irish cream creamers. I’m about to be off the chain!!!

  58. I walked away from my desk for a little while and I came back to JoJo & K-Ci yelling at each other. I know white folks must HATE me and my music!
    hahahahaaa!
I’m gonna get Fanny’s cd and REALLY blow them out next week!

  59. LMAO @ JoJo and K-Ci yelling at each other!! Girl I get live in the evenings here. I try to make sure everyone is gone and it’s on and popping. There has been a couple times a 25/20 walked up when someone was barking profanity!

  60. I had Kanye on before this but he’s pretty mild. They’re not ready for Luke in here. I wouldn’t get jack-sh*t done if I put on some booty music. Just THINKING about it, I had to stop and chair dance for a few seconds.

  61. YLY – I don’t understand. Is that gonna make you cuss or is it gonna make you hyper?

  62. HersheysKiss says:

YLY– I ONLY go from the standpoint of work and representing herself well. All the other stuff (namely the 25/20s) I leave alone. My mother, sister, brother and current sis-in law nag her. I can’t do that or she’ll back off confiding in me. No offense, but I can’t discuss it anymore. Regardless of the hair, her love of the 25/20 and brother’s response to it makes me ill. That’s a story for another day. Woo saaah!

45 min then I go for a swim. I need to be free of this crap. I need an anonymous donor.

  63. I IS HYPER.

Did I read HK needs a sperm donor?

  64. HersheysKiss says:

    :x GO AWAY YLY

  65. crookedlettereye says:

The guy’s been workin out at the gym hella hard….*been taking pics of my progress wanna see? lol jk* should be right where I need to be in bout a month….im happy anyway…I gotta an offer to be treasurer(on a volunteer basis, which I was already a volunteer anyway) of a local branch of a national organization…a pretty big deal…they have really big influence on the happenings of downtown tupelo & this region…i havent taken the offer yet still making sure that A: i wanna do it…and B: the workload wont be too strenuous….it will be a great opportunity for me exposure and experience wise…i’d be a fool not to do it actually but I want to make sure I go into with my eyes wide open….pray for the dude….

  66. Get it crooked. You are a BEAST!

  67. crookedlettereye says:

Thanx Ylawd. When I gets it…I GETS IT…lol how have you been?

  68. I’m good. I like “When I gets it…I GETS IT…” ;-)

  69. LawdHvMrcy says:

That gotdamb chrystler broke down on us. Had to wait an hour in the heat for someone to get one of our poolcars to pick us up…
