Video: ‘Scottsboro Boys’ Musical Coming to Broadway

*Broadway.com is reporting that the Broadway arrival of The Scottsboro Boys musical is among the most anticipated shows of the upcoming fall theater season.

From the powerhouse team of John Kander and the late Fred Ebb (Chicago, Cabaret, Curtains), the play uses the minstrel show performance style to tell the compelling true story of a group of young African American teenagers falsely accused of raping two white women in 1931 Alabama, and the boys’ attempts to prove their innocence.

The production stars Colman Domingo, Forrest McClendon, and Joshua Henry – currently in a pre-Broadway run at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis through Sept. 26.

The musical is scheduled to open on Broadway at the Lyceum Theatre, starting in October 2010. View clips below.

  1. Maybe it’s just me but somehow I just don’t see such a serious story being set to a musical. Oh well, if it gives people who otherwise would have not heard the story a chance to learn something I’m all for it.

“the play uses the minstrel show performance style to tell the compelling true story…” WTF…you mean to tell me the ONLY way to get the point of the story across is to use one of the most insulting and degrading means of acting in the history of America? Please don’t piss on me and tell me it’s raining!!

I was thinking the sam thing. I agree with both posts. Tjis story should be a dramtic play instead of a musical and using the minstrel style is beyond insulting if you ask me.

Pass…paying to be mad at white folk isn’t my idea of entertainment.

  5. queeniebunz says:

Ridiculous. I had to read a book about this in college. There is nothing musical about this and nothing entertaining about this case. Ridiculous.
