*In Tampa, Florida, a jury could not reach a decision after three days of deliberation in the drug conspiracy case of reggae singer Buju Banton. The jury was split and caused the case to be declared a mistrial.
In case of a conviction, the star would have faced life in prison. Banton was accused of conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine and denied purchasing drugs from an undercover cop in Dec. 2009.
A surveillance video showed him tasting the cocaine at a warehouse.
Banton referred to himself as a “humble musician” who was merely “talking crap” during his conversation with the prosecution’s lead witness.
“I talk too much, but I am not a drug dealer,” Buju told the court in his own defense. “When I realized this was real drugs, I thought, ‘This is a real drug dealer, and I want no part of it … I was in over my head.”
At EUR press time he was still in custody; his lawyer is asking that he be released on bond.
