President Barack Obama with First Lady Michelle Obama (R) and their daughters Sasha (2nd L) and Malia walk out from the White House to attend Sunday service at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Washington, September 19, 2010.

*President Barack Obama made a rare public appearance at a church service on Sunday (Sept. 19), walking from the White House with his family to nearby St John’s Episcopal church, the AP reports.

They joined about 40 other worshippers, taking communion as a family and hearing a sermon on a passage from the Gospel of Luke that ends “You cannot serve God and wealth.”

Afterward, the Obamas walked back to the White House across Lafayette Square, which was closed to the public.

The president has been hesitant to officially join a church in Washington, citing a desire not to disrupt the services for everyone else.

Although he is a Christian who speaks often about his faith, Obama has struggled with a widely held misconception that he is a Muslim. Last month, after opinion polls found that one in five Americans believe he is a Muslim, Obama said a “network of misinformation” was stoking the rumors.
