*After months of being battered by Republicans, President Obama finally stepped back into the campaign ring Wednesday.

His speech in Cleveland, with its bracing attacks on John Boehner and GOP policies, cheered the president’s base.

But it could be too little to late to save the second half of his term, The Daily Beast’s Eric Alterman writes. Obama’s policies have saved the economy from hitting bottom, but the public thinks they failed. Now he’s finally making a clear distinction between his policies and his opponents’ stances.

“Obama is saying he’s for middle-class tax cuts,” Alterman writes, “and the other guy wants to give away billions more to the right.”

His dispirited base wasn’t even sure Obama would even fight back this much. The real test is whether he has the stamina to say it over and over, every day, until the election.
