*So why is Google’s logo looking like the above drawing today?

The search engine is honoring jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie with a stylized mosaic doodle of his image on what would have been his 93rd birthday.

The famed trumpeter, who died at age 75 in 1993, was also a bandleader, singer and composer. He helped pioneer bebop and Afro-Cuban jazz and was considered one of the great jazz players and teachers of all time.

His image is associated with his puffy cheeks and trademark trumpet – with a bell that bends upward at a 45 degree angle rather than pointing straight ahead, as with the conventional design. According to Dizzy’s autobiography, this originally occurred after someone sat on his trumpet during a job in 1953 and Gillespie liked the change in tone that resulted.
