*”The Scottsboro Boys,” a musical based on the real story of nine black teenagers framed for rape and wrongfully put on death row, will close Dec. 12 on Broadway, reports the AP.
Producers said Tuesday the show, directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman, will have played 49 performances and 29 previews. It marks the final collaboration of songwriters John Kander and Fred Ebb; Ebb died in 2004.
“The Scottsboro Boys,” a hit earlier this year off-Broadway, frames the 1930s-era story as a minstrel show and then immediately subverts it by having an all-black cast, except for the master of ceremonies, John Cullum.
Other Broadway shows that have recently announced closings include “Elling,” “La Bete” and “A Life in the Theatre.”
I did not understand the point of making this ordeal a play in hte first place, has broadway run out of ideas??? Geesh!!!
I kinda was thinking the same thing, Babycakes, but I really was considering seeing it because it’s an all black cast which is rare on Broadway.
What’s wrong with the topic as a play? All musicals aren’t happy singalongs. I’ve seen plays that just made you want to grap a bottle of something and crawl under your bed.
