*ABC News correspondent Steve Osunsami reported the story earlier this week of the 50 year anniversary of a judge’s decision forcing the University of Georgia to desegregate.

Charlayne Hunter-Gault was one of two black students to attend the University that year. And in 1963, she would become its first black graduate.

Her journalism degree would take her to WRC-TV in Washington, DC, to The New York Times then back to TV in 1978 and PBS’ The MacNeil/Lehrer Report, where she would spend 19 years.

Hunter-Gault moved to South Africa in 1997 where she worked for NPR, and later was CNN’s bureau chief and correspondent in Johannesburg.
