*The figures vary a little depending upon which organization is doing the counting; but the overall picture remains clear: African American women are getting abortions at a much higher rate than any other segment of the nation’s female population.

According to data released this week by the Guttmacher Institute, 30 percent of all abortions are done on Blacks women. This is even though Black females constitute less than 12 percent of the nation’s female population.

Meanwhile, a similar study by Planned Parenthood in 2000 found that Blacks made up 17 percent of all live births but 36 percent of all abortions.

The more recent Guttmacher figures had Blacks receiving 30 percent of the nation’s abortions compared 36 percent being performed on white women and 25 percent being performed on Hispanic females The Guttmacher figures are based on 2008 data.

One reason for the higher rate of abortions among African American females appears to be a far greater number of unplanned pregnancies. Guttmacher found that 69 percent of pregnancies among Black women are unplanned. This compares to 40 percent among white women and 54 percent among Hispanic women.

Overall, 40 percent of all pregnancies ended in abortion. Teenagers get 18 percent of abortions but the most likely person to get an abortion (61 percent) is a woman who already has one or more children. In 2008, there were 1.21 million abortions in America compared to 1.31 million in 2000.
