*Kanye West is standing by a joke he made on his Twitter page over the weekend about Britney Spears and her new No. 1 single, “Hold It Against Me.”

Referencing his past controversy with Taylor Swift, when he told the country star that she didn’t deserve an MTV Video Music Award over fellow nominee Beyoncé, West tweeted: “Yo Britney, I’m really happy for you and I’mma let you be #1, but me and Jay-Z’s single [H.A.M.] is one of the best songs of all time!”

After Britney fans had a fit, West insisted that the comment was in good fun and not designed to hurt the pop star.

“When I said the comment about Brittney I was giving her props for being #1 not dissing her at all! How can you ‘let’ someone be number one??!! That was the whole joke!!! I know intelligent people know this so bear with me, (sic)” he explained.  “But stop making it seem that my aim is to hurt or down people! That’s just not my style! As pop stars we’re all in this s**t together! We on the inside of the TV!”

West insisted that he would not let the controversy bother him, adding: “If you don’t give em a story they just make one up. I’m just trying to focus & stay creative! Keep bringing dope s**t to the world!”
