Video: Aretha Responds to Halle Berry’s Fears over Biopic

*After hearing reservations from Halle Berry about playing her on the big screen, Aretha Franklin hasn’t given up her pursuit of the Oscar winner.

During red carpet interviews for the Golden Globes several weeks ago, Berry repeatedly said she couldn’t play Franklin in a biopic about her life because she can’t “carry a tune.”

Franklin says that shouldn’t stop her from considering the part.

“Many actors have portrayed vocalists by lip-synching to the artist’s original recordings,” Franklin wrote in a letter read on the “Wendy Williams Show” Monday. [Watch below to hear Aretha’s entire letter.]

As previously reported, Berry joked to Access Hollywood’s” Shaun Robinson, “Somebody needs to tell ReRe I can’t sing!”

Wendy Williams, meanwhile, offered her two cents on who should play the Queen of Soul – suggesting Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah or Taraji P. Henson for the part.

Sorry, but slapping on a wig and glamming it up via airbrush does not persuade me that Halle Berry is the one to play Aretha Franklin. LEAVE HALLE ALONE!!!

Dang! Aretha is determined to have Halle play her in the biopic whether hse can sing or not. The other ladies suggested for the role would be good too BUT!!! it seems to me Aretha is thinking like the rest of hollywood that Halle is the standard of beauty

Yes, and that is just sooooo egomaniacal of Aretha. Aretha Franklin is known for her SINGING, not her beauty!!!!

  3. clearly she aint taking my advice on gabby sidibe….

Again, she has a wonderful self image if she sees her adult-self looking like Halle Berry. No disrespect, but, the physical resemblance is as much of a stretch as it is having Halle attempt to sing Aretha’s material.

That is a one helluva mirror that Aretha has to project herself so confidently. You go girl!

  5. Aretha needs to let it go. Halle just told her ‘nicely’ that she does not want to do it. Halle has already played in a singer’s biopic (one of Frankie Lymon’s wives) and does not see much success in it. Plus, Halle needs control just as much as Aretha. So I don’t think it will work. With the exception of Hudson, the other choices would be suitable to play other entertainers. I’ve always see Latifah as Pearl Bailey. They are close to each other physically and facially. Taraji would make a great Tammi Terrell (she’s resembles her so closely, it’s eerie!) or Diana Ross. That would leave Jennifer Hudson, who I think, would do Aretha justice on screen. Aretha should give her some consideration instead of being ‘obsessed’ with Halle. I love Aretha but I don’t get this one!

    • Gabby Sidebe…Gabby Sidebe…Gabby Sidebe…

      • You need to behave yourself! Aretha was never as big as Gabby. Matter of fact, her weight has always flucutated (sp?) during the prime of her career. There are alot of pics of Aretha when she was skinny in the 70s. That’s why I think Jennifer Hudson might work.

I am curious to know what era of Aretha’s life she is planning on filming because if it is her younger years (teens and twenties), I don’t really think it would be much of a stretch for Halle to play it. Before Aretha’s soul days, when she was performing jazz and standards, she was somewhat of a glam queen. On another note, I’m not interested in seeing Jennifer Hudson in any acting role. Hell, I can barely stand to watch her perform.

another non singer/actress would be Beyonce…
