Kanye West makes his way from the Grand Palais in Paris after attending the Chanel fashion show. Fall-winter 2012 fashion week in Paris. (March 8, 2011)

*An item on Elle’s Fashion blog indicates just how serious Kanye West is about fashion.

The rapper recently asked to meet with Tunisian-born designer Jean Touitou, founder of the French ready-to-wear brand A.P.C., to get some tips on how to succeed in the business and advice on his upcoming move to Paris.

Blogger Britt Aboutaleb writes…

There are a lot of charming things about A.P.C.’s founder Jean Touitou: he rides a Triumph motorcycle, keeps a recording studio in the basement of his headquarters and speaks openly about his thoughts on the fashion industry.

Also, when a friend came calling last week and asked Touitou to meet with a guy looking for advice on succeeding in fashion the A.P.C. honcho said, “Sure.”  Fifteen minutes into the meeting with “Kenny” he asked, “But sir what is your trade?  What do you do with your life?” When West answered, “I’m a rap artist,” he finally realized he was speaking to Kanye West.

The rapper’s been introducing himself as a designer all week (he told Touitou “I hate celebrities”) and talking about his upcoming move to Paris.  He wants to establish his label here for added legitimacy and Touitou says he sounds serious, and passionate, but that “he only sees the empire, he doesn’t know the sacrifice and that real life happens here,” gesturing to the seamstresses below, the sales floor we’re on and the design studio above.

West has run into a bit of trouble in Paris, though most designers welcome the attention that comes with his front row presence, at least one has asked him to leave when he popped up uninvited.  And while some industry insiders, like Touitou, are willing to offer him advice on his fashion plans, others just laugh it off.   West’s been trying to launch a label for years and it sounds like the wheels are finally in motion.
