*Barry Weiss has officially been named Chairman & CEO of Island Def Jam and Universal Motown Republic Group following the resignation this morning of Antonio “L.A.” Reid.
Weiss comes to the Universal Music Group-owned labels from RCA/JIVE Label Group, where, as chairman and CEO, he oversaw a roster that includes Justin Timberlake, Jamie Foxx, Kelly Clarkson, Britney Spears, Kings of Leon, and Jennifer Hudson.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Weiss’ new position, which is based in New York, puts to rest rumors that the executive could come in above Jimmy Iovine, who runs the very profitable Interscope Geffen A&M Records and is a permanent mentor on “American Idol’ this season.
By heading IDJ and Universal Motown, Weiss will oversee Universal Republic (Amy Winehouse, Owl City), Mercury Records (Duffy, Matthew Morrison) and Universal Motown (Lil Wayne, Nelly, Nicki Minaj). IGA, which is based in Los Angeles, will not see its management structure affected.
As previously reported, Reid is headed to Simon Cowell’s “The X Factor,” where he will serve as judge.
