Nielsen Study: African Americans Watch the Most Television

*African Americans have the highest rate of total TV usage, according to the Nielsen State of the Media report, which was released on Wednesday and breaks down viewing trends by ethnicity, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

In November 2010, when the data was compiled, African Americans used their TVs an average of 7 hours, 12 minutes each day — above the U.S. average of 5 hours, 11 minutes. Asians watched TV the least, at just 3 hours and 14 minutes a day on average.

African Americans used DVD players and video game consoles more than average, but whites were more likely to use DVR. Some 40 percent of white families own DVRs, which is higher than average.

NFL coverage across Fox, CBS and ESPN made the top 10 broadcast/cable program rankings nearly regardless of ethnicity — except for Hispanics, who tuned in mostly to Spanish-language programming.

Well that explains all of the foolish shows aimed at “us” i.e. Flava of Love, I Love NY etc. There is obviously an audience.

My DVR stays in the 80%-90% full everyday.
My television is on more often than I am actually watching it so this information is entirely misleading for some.
My viewing includes the History Channel, NGTV, MSNBC, LOGO and TVONE.
I watch TVONE programming fairly regularly. Is that channel even tracked?
Is this study trying to say that blacks, (the term African American doesn’t apply to all people of color….some of us are of different ancestry) are possibly less educated because we watch television. It also happens to be one of the most inexpensive forms of entertainment. So in this rather tight economy, watching educational programming can suffice as entertainment too.

  6. I agree. In this tight economy, tv is an inexpensive form of entertainment. There is an abundance of eductional programs, and movies. My tv viewing includes the Weather Channel. And I also watch tv while riding my spin bike and working out.
