*Project Islamic H.O.P.E.’s Najee Ali led a prayer vigil of over three dozen civil rights activists on Saturday April 23 outside the home of Marilyn Davenport.
Davenport is the Orange County, California GOP official who has so far refused requests to resign from her post as a elected member of the Orange County GOP Central Committee after it was discovered that she emailed a racist image depicting President Obama and his family as chimpanzees to several colleagues with the message: “Now you know why – No birth certificate!” Davenport said it reflected the president’s character.
“Our prayer vigil in front of Marilyn Davenport’s home demonstrated what the religious right claims to be: people of God. Our coalition offered prayers for Davenport, asking God to number 1: forgive her for her actions. number 2: Use this as a means by which we can all gather as one United America. and number 3: broaden the humility needed in the Republican Party.
Our standing in Prayer was a call and invitation to the Tea Party members who seek to disrespect President Obama with racist images to stop the hate. We believe that God can change the hearts of those we disagree with. And were continuing to ask that Marilyn Davenport humble herself and offer her resignation.” — Statement by Najee Ali.
