Sugar Ray Leonard Reveals He was Sexually Abused as a Teen

*Former boxing champion Sugar Ray Leonard has said that he was sexually abused as a teenager by a “prominent” Olympic coach, according to a report in the New York Times on Tuesday.

The newspaper said Leonard made the claim in his upcoming autobiography, “The Big Fight: My Life In and Out of the Ring.”

Leonard, now 55, said he was assaulted by the unnamed coach on two occasions. The first was when he was competing at a tournament in Utica, N.Y, at age 15. The second, several years later, happened in car parked in a deserted lot when the coach was discussing with him his prospects at the 1976 Olympics.

“Before I knew it, he had unzipped my pants and put his hand, then mouth, on an area that has haunted me for life. I didn’t scream. I didn’t look at him. I just opened the door and ran,” Leonard wrote.

Leonard, who won the gold medal in the light welterweight division at the Montreal Olympics, said he had been haunted by the ordeal for years but decided to reveal it in his book in the hope that he would help his own healing process.

“I realized I would never be free unless I revealed the whole truth, no matter how much it hurt,” he wrote.

In the book, Leonard also opened up about his use of cocaine, fathering a child at 17 and growing up in a household of alcohol abuse and domestic violence. The book is due to be published in June.

I can personally appreciate his revelation, of being “fondled”, but with the exception of me not being a teen parent……..it doesn’t seem very interesting, black, white, brown and yellow, have been there and done that.

he was more than fondled. sounds like he got a BJ in a car. it’s unclear if he ran out the car after he came or if he ran immediately after being touched. I would think a 21 year old (it happened in 1976) could stop someone from putting their mouth there if they wanted to–especially if they took the time to unzip your fly.

my bad, it doesnt say the second incident happened in ’76; only that it happened several years later.

  2. I applaude Sugar Ray regarding his revelation, these incidents happen more then we would care to know or acknowledge and yes even with our young men, happens with people we entrust with the care and protection of our children ie: preachers, coaches, teachers foster care system and as parents we always have to be vigilant regarding whom we entrust our children with; I believe because of Sugar Rays image young men/women will know that they are not alone and will seek help with undoing the damage of guilt and shame that these predators inflict on these kid for years ……
