*Fox News says hackers are to blame for false tweets that announced President Obama had been assassinated, and have contacted the U.S. Secret Service to investigate.

Six posts appeared early Monday morning on the @FoxNewsPolitics Twitter account, reporting that Obama had been “shot twice at a Ross’ restaurant in Iowa while campaigning” and had “bled out” as a result of his wounds.

The @FoxNewsPolitics Twitter account has 37,195 followers.

Fox News issued an apology on Monday morning saying that hackers were responsible for the disturbing Tweets, and that Foxnews.com had alerted the U.S. Secret Service.

“We will be requesting a detailed investigation from Twitter about how this occurred, and measures to prevent future unauthorized access into FoxNews.com accounts,” said Jeff Misenti, vice president and general manager of Fox News Digital.

Despite the statement, the false messages remained on the account as of late Monday morning.

Neither the U.S. Secret Service nor Twitter spokeswoman Jodi Olsen would publicly comment on the alleged hacking.

A subdivision of hacker group Anonymous, calling themselves Script Kiddies, was purportedly linked to the posts, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
