BET Puts Mo’Nique’s Talk Show on ‘Production Hiatus’

*BET has responded to reports by Media Take Out and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that “The Mo’Nique Show” has been cancelled. The network is choosing to go with another term for the sudden move: “production hiatus.”

“’The Mo’Nique Show’ will be on production hiatus beginning in the Fall,” BET spokesperson Kobe Swanson tells EURweb. “However, new episodes of the show will continue to air throughout the summer. Mo’Nique Hicks and ‘The Mo’Nique Show’ are important to the BET Networks family and we look forward to continuing our relationship with her.”

Earlier today, The Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Radio and TV Talk blogger Rodney Ho contacted Mo’Nique’s sidekick Rodney Perry and reported the following…

At about 1:30 p.m., I called Rodney Perry, who was Mo’Nique’s sidekick on the show. He said he was running into a meeting and didn’t answer my question. While I was at lunch over at the mall court, at 1:40 p.m. EST, he texted me: “I was told indefinite hiatus.”

That’s a euphemism for canceled.

In an interview I did at 2:40 p.m., the stand-up comic said he enjoyed the experience working with Mo’Nique. “I’m selling out shows now,” he said. “That’s a win.” He heard the news from Mo’Nique’s husband but hasn’t spoken to the Oscar-winning actress yet. (He wouldn’t say when he knew about this, implying he has known for awhile.)

“We did some good work,” Perry said. “And I think the show is significant. There hasn’t been an outlet for people of color late night since Arsenio.”

The talk show, which Mo’Nique compared to a high-energy nightly party, lasted two seasons and had been taped in Turner Studios, which are now being used for BET’s show “Reed Between the Lines” through October. When I heard that earlier today, I wondered if that meant “Mo’Nique” was not coming back or had been moved to another studio. If her show were coming back, she would be taping by August. (Like many shows, it does not tape original episodes during the summer.)

This didn’t appear to be an issue of ratings. I didn’t have time to do an entire season’s check on ratings so I sampled four weeks in April, 2011 vs. April 2010. Ratings from April 5 to April 29, 2010 averaged 615,000 viewers a night. From April 4 to April 28, 2011, her show averaged 586,000. That’s only a five percent drop.

Mediatakeout, which broke the story, said there were conflicts between BET management and Mo’Nique. Was it creative and/or financial? The story does not say. It also doesn’t say if BET will seek another talk-show host or just drop the concept.

Perry isn’t sure why the show was cut but thinks it might have been a financial decision. “They haven’t had this type of investment ever,” he said. “We did 300 shows over two seasons. That’s a huge investment.”

Sorry to see Mo’Nique leave. I know there will be a lot of comments to follow saying “Mo’Nique was too loud and glad she’s gone,” but Mo’Nique showcased MANY black actors and singers that I NEVER saw on other talk shows. I applaud her for that. She found people that many of us had FORGOTTEN about. No, she didn’t have interviewing skills like Oprah, but she at least gave it a shot.

    • u are totally on point. monique brought sooooo many black entertainers that have long since been forgotten and will never have been seen on any of the white talk shows i.e. charrele, lenny williams, cast of soul food, anita baker as well as artist of today bilal, musiq, marsha ambroshius [sic], as well as black tv shows such as the cast of “the game” etc etc etc.
if you aint beyonce or rhianna you will NOT see the light of camera on any of these white talk shows. as much as i love phillys on roots band, jimmy fallon rarely has a black guest or band. i guess he fills he has met his quota. so, regardless of how people feel about monique’s interviewing skills she brought a viable outlet to these entertainers and a quality product to the black viewer. the set was gorgeous and do i have to mention “the penthouse players band”, the best late night band to ever play on a late night talk show. i have not seen a band that good on late night. i really hope that tvone or own picks up her show and puts more money behind it.

  2. Snicker says:

I agree that Monique wasn’t the best interviewer but she did her best I suppose and she did have a lot of black entertainers that no one else is even thinking about having on their show. I do applaud her for that and hope that somebody picks her show back up.

  3. jbfromptown says:

I guess her deal with the devil has run out. Time to pay the piper now chubby.

  4. naturalsista says:

I too liked her show because of the reasons mentioned in the posts ^. People you would not normally see on Jay, Dave or those other late night shows Monique brought on and for that I applaud her. I hope the show is picked up by another media outlet.

    • naturalsista isnt it strange? some of these posts are confusing, on one hand, posters in the past were upset because of the lack of black quality late talk shows, yet on the other hand, when they are offered a quality black late night show they would rather go back to not having a show at all if they dont like the way that the host speaks or the network that carries the show. huh? i dont get it.

      • Shoelover says:

Our opinions based on based on situations, who we have identified in that situation and how we want to be seen………versus our opinions being based on our identity and the foundation we stand on. We *have* become a wishy-washy, chase after other cultures ’cause we don’t like our own….type community.

  5. timmdogg_00 says:

Like the various posters here stated; she did in fact have a lot of black celebrities that main media totally forgotten or wouldn’t have acknowledge… thank you, Mo Nique! I hope /pray she will return because no matter what she did keep it real and interesting. If not, then thank you for two awesome years of seeing a beautiful black and articulate woman air the waves of journalism!

  6. musbdherbs says:

    Isn’t she on BET?

Why wouldn’t she have a host of black celebrities? It’s BET.

She has them because they aren’t asked to go on other shows. And again, its BET.

The network that puts on the largest selection of black artists on one night..the BET AWARDS.

    • i thought it was about time for musbdwhiteytoberighty to chime in giving a thumbs down to anything that is afrocentric or of the african diaspora. what a fucn idiot.

      • TesticAl says:

huey, what’s up homey! How did herbs give a thumbs down to what you said? Did he not speak the truth? I for one like BET at times. You should get on the MAJORITY of the posters on this board that down BET for EVERYTHING! The claim they hate BET so much, yet they are first to watch the awards shows and the like.

    • TesticAl says:

Your post is the truth and you aren’t speaking negatively. I’ve seen her show a few times (not in it’s entirety). The show wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. It was so so. I only tuned in because an artist that I like was being showcased.

Besides, it wasn’t like Monique chose who was going to be on the panel. I’m happy for Monique. She got that money while she could. Flame away people.

      • what up bro! all is well. how bout u?

musbwhiteytoberightey was giving a backhand jab at monique, as he/she does to all things black.

        • TesticAl says:

huey, I’m good homey! Everything is good on my end.

herbs is a man. I personally know him. He’s a good dude. You think he backhands all things black? I’ve never seen that from him. He’s VERY outspoken and goes against the grain at times (I do the same) but I don’t think he is anti black. We have both stood up for black men in certain threads and got beheaded by the women of the board. LOL!

  7. What a great loss. I think as so many others have mentioned this show really helped share so many entertainers, historians, scholars, and others of color whom we would have never seen showcased elsewhere. She did a really great job and she and Rodney had great Chemistry.

Hopefully, someone will pick the show up OR the station and Monique’s team can work out the kinks- if that is the issue.

  8. jbfromptown says:

Why do blacks feel they always need some person to validate them?

    I don’t get it.

    • its a black thing, you wouldnt understand. if u dont like it, stop lurking around in black forums with your “why do blacks” and “validate them”. obviously its something about “us” you like otherwise you wouldnt be sniffing around “our” forums for “our” gossip….capish.

      • TesticAl says:

LMFAO at huey! Hold up, jbfromptown isn’t black?

        • nope, he/she fails to realize or often forgets that he or she is trying to post as being black but sometimes forgets to turn on his or her cloaking device and i am able to see them when they think they are concealed.

        • jbfromptown says:

All the way black as the road bruh!

          • TesticAl says:

Alright jb. I figured that from out past conversations. Shit is funny on here today though.

          • jbfromptown says:

It’s cool. I get bored at the J O so a brother gets on here. Sometimes high comedy, sometimes thought provoking…

      • jbfromptown says:

Fam just because I don’t follow the trend or agree with everyone now I’m not black?

Please. All I’m sayin is why do we search for someone in the Entertainment field to validate our existence? The entertainment genre on its own is as devilish as it comes.

Don’t be mad because I don’t slap hands and cosign and high five with everybody and everyone. I’m a free thinker and don’t just follow trends or agree just to agree.

I’m not that sheep dude that falls off the cliff..

    • RE: blacks needing “validation.”

The desire for validation exists across the all races. We all want our world to reflect us. Now, the mainsream race gets gets validation from the time they wake up in the morning… watch the news, look at the mags, see billboards, go to stores and see the advertisements, watch movies, etc. All these things are overwhelmingly geared to validate them as the most beautiful, intelligent, desirable .. and really the only prototype of humanity that matters.

So, given the absence of the same validation for black people, why would we not desire shows and other media that reflect and affirm our values?

Don’t pretend that is irrational. Other groups get that everyday, while blacks are either portrayed as dumb, animalistic, depraved, immoral and crimanal — or they are not portrayed at all as if they are a trivial subset of the world.

      • jbfromptown says:

Simply because of you(or whomever) looking for entertainment to validate our existence as a people, we are as lost as it comes…

        • synthia says:

NO, no. Not looking for just entertainment. Everything — all media, all news, all forms of art should reflect a wide variety of people. It’s not hard to understand.

  9. But this is not surprise because BET isn’t owned by black people anymore and Viacom couldn’t care less about the people that come on that show. If somebody does pick it up I hope they get rid of that sidekick Monique had because he was annoying as hell & made my azz hurt! UGH!

  10. TesticAl says:

huey you are wildin’ today. LMAO!

    • lol, i dont think im too far off base seeing that he and his cohort jbwatthefuc are always getting their post thrown out of the eur court by the masses of real thinkers.

      • TesticAl says:

I get my posts thrown out as well. That’s because of my past on here though. Remember those days? I’ve grown up. LOL!

      • jbfromptown says:

So you angry because I don’t think like you my brother? It’s ok. I understand..

        • jbfromptown says:

          @huey not you Testic.

My thing is this is a board, if people don’t like it that’s cool. But I have my own black mind and will continue.

          That’s right,

I don’t like or support Obama, Weird Al Sharpton, Messy Jesse none of them. All for various different reasons.

Monique I dont follow, she in an open marriage and won’t admit it. I cant support that so I dont look at her show. Plus I think she will doing anything to be famous.

Any other questions, I’ll be glad to answer…..

Oh and the Ptown stands for Paterson…

  11. lpen1758 says:

Never could get into Monique, but perhaps she was good filling in the space where Arsenio left off……

  12. Shoelover says:

    Honest talk. (RE: validation)

There was a time when all we had to do is look in the mirror or look at each other for validation. One look would say…

“I’m a wonderful shade of brown, built for endurance, beautiful to watch, strong limbs, full nose and/or lips, powerful and full of rhythm in my soul and bones with delectable vocal cadences….we speak on the phone and instantly know each other and recognize shared community. I look at you…and I see me. You look at me and see you.”

But we are/have destroyed that. Because how can you look in your eyes or the eyes of your brother or sister and see yourself……when you been calling them ninja, unca tom, ho, trick, homo or worse? In fact, isn’t that a possible pathos to why we have turned on each other? In embracing individuality, we have stopped seeing each other in the mirror…..and we lash out with hateful words because we only see a non-member.

The words out of our mouths shows the condition of our hearts. It is no wonder many people seek to have us portrayed in an almost perfect light in film. We don’t believe we can have pure perfection (Cosby Show) and we have enough ugly in the mirror and don’t want see it in our entertainment (insert most shows). So anything and everything becomes a contradiction depending on the subject.

This is why I abhor negative talk and name calling. We need to begin seeing and understanding our individuality within our culture, in our community. That is when we can truly dialogue, evolve and create again.

What was the last thing we created….Hip-Hop, right? That was when? and this is what year? Just saying.

  13. lpen1758 says:

By the way, this Board is big enough to accommodate ALL OF US, even if we end up getting ‘a thumb down or up our butts’!! FREEDOM of thoughts is yet sweet, don’t ya think?

  14. Taurusingr says:

@ Huey….yo mayn, “dude” may not be?, but there are a FEW “fake as-s/tryin tah “pass”/sneaky as-ses ‘on dis site, using that “cloak” of which you speak, “my brother”! So….keep ‘on swingin that stick!, you’ll “hit one” eventually. With “me”?, it ain’t their different POV, but the ….racism of their POV that has inspired me to expose dat as-s (as I HAVE done!) but aaaaaanyway, do yo thang, mayn. One!

  15. Taurusingr says:

As for this topic? Y’all ever wonder whyyyyy shows that DO represent Us well “despite the chosen host!” NEVVA last too long!?? Like…even when we don’t like the host?, we STILL watch, for the “guest OF” that host!, so it ain’t about the “ratings” so WTF!? See, it ain’t got shyt tab do with “hosting skills”! It’s about how DAT Black person is evidently “taking viewers AWAY FROM other……shows. Arsenio kicked BOTH Leno and Dave’s as-ses & STILL had to be….taken off. To YT?, it ain’t always about “making money”! Sometimes?, it’s about …..”maintaining the monopoly”. All Day!

  16. Taurusingr says:

Whenever one of Our “dawgs” starts resembling ….independence & strength?, that”dog” has to be….”put down”. ( page 2 of the “YT doctrine”!) And WTF do yall think “YT” buys all the Black businesses?, a lil miney maybe, but maaaaainly?, to keep control of those businesses, via om owns BET AND MTV! & also has STOLEN from BET! The show “Cribs”?, was called something else?, but was 1st on BET, hosted by…Anada Lewis! They took/stole “that” idea AND V Jay as well as others! So… whenever/if ever you wonder why BET “hasnt” progressed lie MTV has?, THATS WTF duh maddah!!! Chuuuuuuuch!
