*Legendary supermodel Iman is not letting Vogue Italia’s feature on its website called “Slave Earrings” die down without having her say.
As previously reported, the renowned fashion publication featured a white woman wearing large gold hoops and called the trend “slave earrings.” [See photo below.] The magazine tried to clean it up by changing the headline to “Ethnic Earrings,” but just made the situation worse with the implicit equivalence.
“I’m a huge fan of Franca Sozzani and Vogue Italia’s website because they have a whole section on black models…But yeah, I didn’t like it,” she said, according to StyleBistro.com. “Slave does not make it ethnic. Mind you, it’s not lost in translation–the word slave, we know what it is. They might as well have called them nigger earrings. For somebody like Franca Sozzani, who did that whole black issue for Vogue, somebody should have said something.”
Also on Wednesday, Iman added the Platinum accessory collection to her popular collection on the Home Shopping Network. Her make-up line, Iman Cosmetics, specializes in shades for women of color.
