Whoa! Audio: Tavis and Cornel = Uncle Toms says Steve Harvey

*There’s been a lot of recourse about the criticism Tavis Smiley and Cornel West have spewed against President Obama.

Steve Harvey in particular spoke out against the duo and even called them “uncle toms.” Yikes.

“I was a huge fan of Cornel West,” he said. “[But] Tavis, I seen him coming a mile away. His anger started when he had a town hall meeting, President Obama couldn’t come because of the campaign trail and he sent Mrs. Obama. He has held that grudge every since.”

He continued, “You don’t have any real basis behind your dislike for this man…you keep masking it saying it’s not about hate. Then what is it about? Poverty existed before January 20, 2008. Where was your damn bus then?”

He kept going off on a rant and even joked about Tavis’ request for the president to sit down at a two to three summit on the issue of poverty.

“Who in the hell got 2-3 days for your ass? I ain’t got time to sit down with your monkey behind for two, three days, let alone the President of the United States. We got three wars going on, the economy crashing and we going to sit down with Tavis ass for three days?”

Then he proposed that Smiley is being funded by someone to say these things and produce the poverty tour.

Harvey continued his rant by referring to Smiley and West as being affiliated with UTLO.org (which stands out for “Uncle Tom Look Out”).

        BOOM!!!!! hahahaa

If you really want to know the motive behind Tavist “HATE” Read today’s Newsone article! That negro is mad because he wasn’t invited to the white house! Because Obama hasn’t acknowledged him! So he thought by criticizing him, that would compell him to come on his show…. NOT, Obama doesn’t think him to be relevant, and so now he is having a temper tantrum summit, and have enlisted duo wonder west to aid him in his crusade to crush the President…. BOW… BANG…. WHOMP… WANG (in my batman and robin fake special effects) HOW PATHETIC!!

            justsayagain,

I understand that you and Steve Harvey have a beef with Tavis, Cornel West and maybe the Congressional Black Caucus because of their outspoken impatience with the President for his lack of attention to the economic plight of black people, and the poor.

I get it, but the facts remain, and they are undeniable and unacceptable. Unemployment in many black communities is nearing 50%, that’s right 50%. I guarantee you if unemployment in the White community among White males was approaching half of that you would see the White House mobilize all of its resources to address the problem.

Because he’s African American, should black folks sit back and suffer while he’s in office, so that it will not seem as though he’s favoring Black People? I think not.

In addition we are setting a dangerous precedent, what will we say to the next President when he seems to show ambivalence to the plight of black people, will we call the people who step to challenge him Uncle Toms? The last person I’d take advice from would be Steve Harvey, give me a brake.

          • Steve hit it right on point, and like always, he was fearless in doing so. As Steve says, President Obama is the President of all the people– and everything he’s done so far indicates he is is trying to be just that. I call what Tavis and Mr. West are doing as nothing but indicative of ego and selfishness. Where was their bus trip to highlight poverty during the previous administration? C’mon fellas, stop having tantrums because you can’t have a personal audience with the President! Can you try to work WITH him instead of trying to undermine him? Can’t you see that you’re falling right into the trap they want Black folks to fall into? Give this President as much respect as you would have given any other one–including your first choice, Hillary. I see your move as angry men with sour grapes! Get a life–and stop being so childish that you want to destroy this President like the many others out there, who fail to even work with him in handling this nation’s overwhelming problems. I think Mr. West and Mr. Smiley ought to be ashamed–cause in their heart, they know the REAL REASON they’ve been on the attack with Mr. Obama. Sad, sad, sad.

  2. nightshift says:

I have to agree with Steve.

  3. MrUnapologetic69 says:

Hmmm… I think Steve is dead-on with this one. And I, too, was a huge fan of Dr. Cornel West and on some level I still am. However, Mr. Smiley irks the heck out of me. I’m so sick of his self-aggrandizement and books about ‘what we need to do as black people” as if he has the only patent on our recovery as a people. I always need aspirin after listening to him speak.

  4. Cade Foster says:

I’m not a Steve Harvey fan, but he is on point here!

  5. Bed_StuyGrl says:

    Right on Steve…!!!

  6. “Poverty existed before January 20, 2008. Where was your damn bus then?”….HELLO!

  7. Another deluded house negroe that is drunk off the Kool-Aid.

Steve Horse Mouth Harvey and Tom Joyner, two water carrying negroes who don’t give a fuck about the less fortunate among us.

Steve using the same tired excuse, that he is the president of the US, and not of the “hood.”

Then he want to pull he health care reform card, as if this country ass negro can’t see that it is a sellout to the health insurance company, and poor people going to catch hell with that mandate. You got people in some states right now who catching hell trying to keep up with all them damn traffic tickets, where they find more and more schemes to keep you broke. I know so many people who got their drivers license suspended for not being able to pay shyt.

Steve, you want to know where Tavis and Cornel getting the money for the bus tour, and accusing them of being hustlers, how about you peddling your books to black women, purporting the right way to treat a lady, when your cheating ass treat your former wife like shyt.

    • you and mustbewhiteytoberighty are two of the most confused negros i have ever seen on a message bored. im thinking that the two of yall nitwits are the ones alternating between driving the bus for these two nutbags.

      • What’s confusing about what I said? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that health care reform was a sellout to the insurance companies. Where do you think the idea of a mandate came from?

Honestly, I thought it was proposed by the Obama admin, until I heard that the Republicans later put forward an alternative plan, which was of course ten times worse. But there was one item in it that could be given some credit, and it was something to address the issue of pre-existing conditions.

The insurance companies barked, saying that the only way they would do that if there was also a mandate in the Republicans plan. That’s when light bulbs went off in my head.
So that’s where the mandate for the Obama plan came from. So when ignant country azz house negroes like Steve Harvey goes around touting the virtues of the Obama health care plan because it ends the problem of pre-existing conditions, just remind them that they are being played by the insurance companies. They have no problem ending pre-existing conditions with the windfall they will receive due to the mandate.

And when will they quit with the tired excuse that he is a president for the country and not for the “hood?”
One of the job of the president is to address inequalities in society. Oh, since Steve is now so rich that he’s not affected by inequalities in our society, it’s OK for him to make fun of those who still are and those that are trying to make a difference.

        • the masses of disenfranchised people are better off with health care reform than they were without it. get over it, move on and stop looking for fires where there are none. geezz, u, tgen, and musbwhiteytoberightey must have been raised by a colony of knumbskulls.

          • bigtwinone says:

Please explain how they are better off with health care reform?

          • jbfromptown says:

All huey does is yell and scream and call people coons and white because they may disagree with the status quo. According to him everybody black is Jesus in the flesh.

          • Can you honestly say that about this health care reform, subject to all the concessions to the Republicans, and signed buy Obama? Even they even give it their vote. Have you factored in how much of a financial burden the mandate is going to be for low income workers, who are otherwise healthy. This is just one more financial burden on top of all the others which the poor has to shoulder to fill the coffers of the wealthy. It’s one thing if there was a mandate with a public option. But Obama discarded that even though there were favorable support for it from both side of the aisle. We all pay mandatory fees every pay check for SS and Medicare, but that shyt going for the public good, not for some Wall Street tycoon.

But what do you expect from someone who is pro Wall Street, and doesn’t have a transformative bone in his body regarding either class or race?

    • Right on Brother a lot of these people don’t even understand what’s the real meat and potatoes here!

  8. jbfromptown says:

Such a me me me culture.

    SMH

  9. bigtwinone says:

I am still trying to figure out what Steve had to say that required this article to be written. All I see is Steve calling them names. He doesn’t offer any insight into why their refutation of the president is wrong. Why does Steve warrant an article when he doesn’t seem to have a grasp of politics? Where are Steves statements on the debt ceiling posted? I want to know what he has done politically that requires black people to listen to consider him a voice of reason in this arena?

    • jbfromptown says:

      Intelligent post.

Steve Harvey is getting paid to do what he did; tell jokes.

    • does not take a rocket scientist to uncover a sell out like tavis and cornel with their poverty pimping game crumbling beneath the two of them. i remember some of the same posters condemning them with that annual black superhero mess that tavis pedaled every year. now some of these same posters are acting as though they are behind these two clowns now that we have a black president.

  10. bigtwinone says:

“I’d love to see Steve have Cornell and Tavis on. But I doubt he would, because he couldn’t possibly debate them on the facts.”

  11. babycakes says:

WOW!! Did Steve really have to go there and start name calling??? I think he could have gotten his point across without being derogatory. Yes, Smiley and Cornell can be a bit irksome at time.

  12. butterpecanrican says:

Wow. Tell us how you really feel!

  13. bigtwinone says:

Notice, he didn’t say anything substantive about the positions they have he disagreed with. His only response is the mere fact that they’re criticizing him at all.

  14. Is Tavis Smiley still relevant? As much as I don’t care for Steve Harvey, I have to agree with him. Instead of badgering the President, help solve the problems. Tavis is an asshole and what merit does a guy with a big ass uncombed afro really have?

  15. timmdogg_00 says:

I totally agree with Steve on this one as well. I can’t believe Tavis of all people is trying to spew anger. Hell, it has only been a few years when people [black people] were on the fence with him…[remember the RAP WARS?] and people were calling him a “Uncle Tom” as well. Poverty, disease, wars, murders, the economy all exisited before the President to office.People think Obama can change things overnight and he I think he is doing the best he can do for what he had to deal with coming in! Once again – we in the black commmunity are so quick to rally for someone and once a a sparkle of unjust is spoken we jump on the “bandwagon” with the backlash! To have these two prominient brothers start this campaign of hate towards the President is just wrong and feeding fuel to the fire for other political extremetist. Don’t get me wrong – Tavis has done a few great things, but to try and be the force of “ousting” the Commander in Chief is wrong on all fronts. As for Dr. Cornel – what has he done in the black community that has been so significant other than his teaching credentials at Harvard? I haven’t heard about him trying to accomodate African Americans enrollment in this Ivy League institution – yet he has time to badger the President with no validity? They both need to put their heads together and focus on things really troublesome in the black communities at this time; drugs, education, killings, obesity, school drop-out rates, diseases, home loans, discriminations, police harrassment and profiling..etc.etc! Get my drift!!!!

  16. jbfromptown says:

While I don’t agree with bringing attention to one’s self in the name of Poverty, I do belieeve Tavis and Cornell bring valid points. Still think they should do things outside of the media and cameras.

Steve Harvey has always been a coon who shucks and jives for the masses. His interests are MONEY and that’s it. He is a high ranking Mason and cares about the elite only.

    Wolf in sheep’s clothing.

    • ohhhh, so u dumb azz can call people coons and shuckers and jives but when huey does it then its a problem. negro shut yo dumb behind up.

      • jbfromptown says:

yep. I refuse to the insult thing on here. I’ll just share my point of view.

I see you took that personal my brotha. Look we can always have a discussion.

        • i say what the he11 i dayum well please homey. mind yo bitness. u aint got to comment on my post if u dont want to. i dont give a good got dayum. as far as taking anything personal, i dont know u fool. u spew hate my way, spect me to spit back in yo foolish face. over.

  17. Steve Harvey is a damn ‘Uncle Tom’ right along with his boys, Tavis and Cornell…he needs to stop the shannigans (sp), really! They are all poverty pimpin’ and getting the crumbs off the master’s table for doing it. Let’s concentrate more on the fruit than the tree. And like all fruit, you’ve gotta get close-up on it, smell it sometimes and touch it just to see if you’re getting what what you thought you might be. One example: Here we have ‘ol Steve claiming that he is a Christian, all on TBN crying (which is a joke), all on his own show – if it’s the right timing – saying that he is a follower of Christ or that ‘The Christ’ is in him. Well, I know you’re a comedian-n-thangs but if you see ‘the light’ and ‘the light’ be in you then ‘the light’ comes out. For him to get on his show and go about it the way he did is negative, anyway you look at it…I certainly didn’t feel “enlightened”. Is this the example you set on your Mentoring Weekends for young boys? I’m not judging the guy, that’s not my place nor intent, but I am shedding some light on what’s really going on. Steve along with Tavis and Cornell and the host of these other cowards out here grinnin’ in the spotlight trying to make it seem like something other than what it is are all parts of the problem. The sooner we start calling these ‘agents’ out and getting off the celebrity bandwagon which, by the way, ain’t doing nothing for Us besides keeping our minds caught-up in the same ‘ol PROGRAM, the sooner we can come together and do something about our situation, a situation more bleek than we seem to want to admit/understand. Obama ain’t gonna do it – he’s with them…your local (not state, it’s too late if they’ve gotten that far) politicians might try but ultimately, they can’t do much for you if they want to remain in the game, eventually they’ll be with them, too…Oprah may look like she’s doing something but she ain’t “really” doing it either, she’s with them. Who is them? Do your own research, who I am I anyway, but you can start by asking yourself a lot of “why?” questions, and pretty soon – if you’re awake even when you’re asleep, especially when you’re supposed to be awake – it will all make sense…common sense. See, we’ve been “programmed” to be around here waiting for a savior and the savior is already within each and every one of us, waiting for us to uncover It from underneath all the garbage that’s been forced on top. This is the truth…the truth they don’t want you to know. But why? I’m gone…later for you, Steve.

  18. musbdherbs says:

Hmmm, so he didn’t disagree with anything they said, only that they have the “nerve” to say it.

FACT, Obama was calling on black folk to hold Obama accountable BEFORE his SOTBU. So the idea that his pissed for something happening 3 years ago is some pure monkey shyt.

Tavis’ foundation has been in existence since the 90′s…well before 2008 and well, well before the era of Obama and if you don’t believe that he “did” anything, look at the work his foundation has done.

Most of the commentary against Tavis and West are based on the purely hyperbloic fallacies presented by their critics. Most often than not, none of it is based in fact. Just the angle people want to present.

Currently, we are in an environment where any criticism of Obama labels you an Uncle Tom. PLEASE explain to me how that benefits US. We’re spending so much time trying to coddle and protect the president. But what about US. What about black folk? We dismiss even the most objective criticism just to protect ONE MAN. Not a race. BUT ONE MAN.

    • jbfromptown says:

      A man

    • Not simply to protect ONE MAN but the BLACK one.

It is possible to be proud of Obama’s accomplishments without being a mindless dittohead, y’know.

that’s part of what obama has been talking about from the outset of holding government as well as HIMSELF accountable. It’s only through that type of pressure on our elected officials that any chance of breaking thru this stranglehold that corporations and their money have in our government is going to be surmounted.

People like Steve Harvey who think any sort of criticism is somehow unacceptable and even borderline ‘racist’ are part of the problem.

  19. musbdherbs says:

He is not God. He’s not Jesus. He’s not a spiritual or religious leader.

He is one man whom we just found out about no less than 7 years ago. Yet, we are willing to dismiss 60 damn years of black folks’ civic activism for ONE MAN.

    Yeah that one, Obama.

  20. jbfromptown says:

Let’s stop putting men on pedestals and follow God.

    • knock it off with the preaching bishop. this is a forum. not your dayum bibilishous soap box. stick to the issues. Amen.

      • jbfromptown says:

Ok that’s fine. But it’s the truth. Putting Steve, Tavis, Cornell, your momma, all on pedestals.

        It’s just dumb.

  21. My nigga huey is wildin’. LOL!
    What up Herbs!

  22. Taurusingr says:

About TIME someone “famous” called these “tapdancers” ‘on day shyt!!! “This” is all “I’ve” been sayin!!!!! Bravo, Steve, BRAVO!!, wat to be…..BLACK!!! All Day!!

  23. Taurusingr says:

BUT!!!!, let Us not be distracted by this “niggativity”, & lose focus on getting Obie re-elected! That’ s ALL this BS is designed for!!!! Chuuuuuuuch (& a few “Sunday schools!!!)

  24. Taurusingr says:

Oooooh looks like some of OUR “Toms” dun snuck up in hurr, & “showed dey as-ses”! No biggy! But…”I see you”…”colored guuuul”! And a good “D.N.”! to you AND yo “party”! (Bling/Winning!)

  25. Grace12_34 says:

Steve has the MOUTH OF A HORSE and Tavis is has a “monkey behind?” I can’t STAND this media ho.

  26. Harvey is ‘hot’ right now; he continues to make his rounds all over the place, secular and religious world: Dr. Phil, book stores, game shows, radio programs, gospel tours, etc. He’s just another ‘phoney’ lining his pockets as long as he can, and folks fall for him……….

  27. Tavis and Prof have just as much rights to go around and do and say what they want, as well as Harvey has the right to say what he wants! The name calling on both parts are just attention grabbing tactics…………..so don’t get all worked up and fall for all the hype!

  28. brownhornet says:

Its funny how comedians like Steve Harvey suddenly become experts on politics when Obama comes into office. Steve Harvey really repeated Al Sharpton talking points.
So Steve, if Obama is unable to change things for a specific group of people, then why are the LBGT groups getting Bills passed, and mad money for programs while Blacks get a free Obama T Shirt??? Hey Steve, most black folks insurance levels are going down, and the cost is going up. What world are you living in? Education? What Education initiatives has Obama proposed that will help Blacks go to College? Last I heard Grants were being cut and the feds took over Student loans? Hello? Steve, seriously dude, stick to telling jokes and the radio job with the built-in Amen corner. You couldnt point to one thing that black benefited from, yet you pushing for reelection so we can get the same thing again. Obama supports and unions got paid in the Stimulus Bill, what about black folks. $250????? Steve go back to sleep, PLEASE!

  29. That dunce picture of Harvey attached to this story is perfect. A dumbass making dumbass statements. Those who are co-signing him calling Cornel west of all people an “Uncle Tom” over Barack Obama (wtf?) are just as ignorant.

I wish Huffpost had not highlighted that one very minor statement in what was an awesome session on C-Span. This issue has all the ignorant, no-nothing, emotionalists showing out.

    smh

  30. G. Manuel says:

Steve Harvey? I thought he was a comedian that isn’t particularly funny. What does he have to offer to the dialog about the growing poverty level, especially amongst blacks? What’s with the childish name-calling? Why does diverse dialog be regarded as combat in our community? Mr. Harvey should stick to his platform of a certain kind of humor, or continue to share that humor as he speaks about God on TBN. Otherwise, get informed and get involved. Uncle Tom? You calling the kettle black? Darn….

  31. [quote]Who in the hell got 2-3 days for your ass? I ain’t got time to sit down with your monkey behind for two, three days, let alone the President of the United States.[/quote]

OK, this is beyond the pale. Remember when the Tea party was accused of comparing Obama to apes? That wasn’t OK and neither is this feeling among the black community that since it’s between themselves that they can engage in all manner of ignorance by comparing each other to primates and calling each other then “n ” word.

It seems Steve Harvey is part of the problem in the black community, not the remedy.

  32. SoopDawg1 says:

Isn’t this the same guy that tried to back stab Bernie Mack when he got a tv show? He’s talking about doing for the country, now we are included with the rest of America? How about when the number of black unemployment vs whites is higher? I’m sure a lot of you mofos was upset when these numbers came out, but Obama didn’t mention one thing about this. We don’t exist when it comes to even mentioning us in the media, but let there be something about gay people come up. His ass will send out a press release quicker then a mofo. He wants to see where Tavis’ money is coming from. Negro show your finacial statements on the money that you are keeping from your wife. Man fukk Steve Harvey. He ain’t said shyt.

  33. I met Tavis at Claremont University in LA. He didn’t start being against Obama, but, following his book “Accountable,” he did say that we should look carefully at what he does and suggest “in love” (a la the Bible way) improvements if they are needed. I feel Tavis is honest, principled, and one of the best interviewers on TV.

  34. This riff began when some of the intellectual elite believed they had been dissed when the President announced his candidacy on the first day of the NAACP National Conference. What these guys fail to grasp is that they are not the chosen ones. Their intellectual gibberish and mumbo jumbo has played out and is no longer relevant.
