*According to NewsOk.com, Randy Roberts Potts said he grew up as part of a loving family and extended family headed by his grandfather, the late renowned televangelist Oral Roberts, founder of Oral Roberts University.
Potts is the son of Oral Roberts’ daughter Roberta Roberts Potts.
He said it wasn’t until he was in his late teens that he was made to fear what his heart was telling him — that he was homosexual.
Potts, 37, said a relative spoke to him after a funeral, telling him that God became so angry about homosexuality that he destroyed a whole city because of it.
The reference to Sodom and Gomorrah “put this fear in me.”
“She felt like she was trying to rescue me from bad choices,” he said.
Potts said that trepidation led him away from his faith even though he had grown up in a faith-full, conservative family.
He said he did something he hadn’t thought possible.
“In my 20s, I ran away from my faith and religion.”
Potts said he eventually began to read the Bible to find out exactly what it says about homosexuality. He said he found that Scripture “is not so clear-cut.”
He said while some passages of Scripture call homosexuality an abomination, another passage (Leviticus) calls eating shellfish an abomination.
“Why can we ignore some passages in the Bible, but not others?” he said.
