*Forbes magazine has released this year’s list of the 400 richest Americans and only one African American made it. Television talk-show diva Oprah Winfrey is the 139th wealthiest person in the nation with a total estimated net worth of $2.7 billion. No other black person even came close to getting on the list which is composed almost entirely of billionaires.
However, in a special section entitled “Billionaires in the Making,” Forbes projects that entertainment luminaries Jay-Z, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Tyler Perry are among 13 Americans who appear headed for billionaire status.
Meanwhile, for the 18th consecutive year Microsoft founder Bill Gates was the richest person in the nation with wealth estimated at $59 billion. He was followed by investor Warren Buffett ($39 billion); Oracle founder Larry Ellison ($33 billion); industrialists Charles and David Koch ($25 billion apiece); Wal-Mart heirs Christy Walton ($24.5 billion); Jim Walton ($21.1 billion) and Alice Walton ($20.9 billion); hedge fund investor George Soros ($22 billion); and casino king Sheldon Adelson ($21.5 billion).
While most of the rest of the nation was losing income and wealth over the past year, America’s super-rich were simply getting wealthier. The total net worth of the richest 400 rose by 12 percent through August to a whopping $1.53 trillion.
