It depends on who ya doing. If they don’t get yearly pap smears to determine if they have the HPV virus then that’s a problem.

  2. brooklynbabe says:

The HPV test is a separate test.

A pap smear is used to detect cell abnormalities. If your pap test shows dyplasia (abnormal cells), your doctor “may” order an HPV exam to help rule out what is causing the abnormal cells.

The article is misinformative as most cases of HPV go undetected because HPV tends not to present symptoms. It is especially true that men do not present symptoms. HPV can cause warts in the genital region but, it usually doesn’t. Since there tend to be no symptoms, it has been very widely spread. It has been surmised that the majority of the adult population is affected.

The vaccine that they have made available to girls currently only guards against two of the most virulent strains of the disease. (That means that there are others that I am sure will someday mutate and pick up where the other two leave off, only worse. :-) )Women can ask their doctors to vaccinate them if they haven’t already been exposed to the disease. I’ve heard rumblings that maybe, one day, a vaccine might be made for men.

These new articles about the increase of throat cancer in men are now coming to light due to increased focus on the rampant run up of throat cancer in women, which is attributed to participating in oral sexual activities. The info about this disease and the perils of oral have been around for over 20 years now but, were widely ignored. Now that they realize men are also increasingly being adversely affected, I’ve seen an explosion in the discussion both online and in the news.
