*As previously reported, Octavia Spencer was one of four Screen Actors Guild award nominees from “The Help” announced this morning, joining star Viola Davis, co-star Jessica Chastain and a motion picture ensemble nod to lead the pack of film contenders this year.
Critics and fans saw this day coming for Octavia back in the summer, when folks first witnessed her portrayal of Minny the headstrong maid in the movie based on Kathryn Stockett’s best seller.
Spencer told The Hollywood Reporter what she was doing when she found out about her SAG nomination for outstanding supporting actress in a film.
“I was awake at 2:45 am. I hadn’t invested emotionally in this process until now” she said. “I didn’t want the disappointment, but everything hit me last night! It could be real! I didn’t watch the announcements though. I was too scared!
“This is all very humbling. We’ve all taken this journey of putting ourselves out there, not being able to pay bills. Life changes on a dime doesn’t it? To be recognized by the people who know exactly what we go through is the most rewarding.
“I’m so excited for [‘Bridesmaids’ nominee [Melissa McCarthy, who I’ve become close to, and of course Jessica Chastain and Viola from our movie. I’m just over the moon. We are ‘the little movie that could.’”
WARNING, Spoiler Alert! If you haven’t seen the film or read the book, but plan on doing so, read no further!
One of “The Help’s” most memorable moments, and likely one of the scenes in the minds of SAG voters, involved both Chastain and Spencer – as Celia Foote and her maid Minny, respectively – when Minny discovers Celia has miscarried on the bathroom floor.
In the exclusive audio below, Jessica and Octavia, who became very close friends during filming, reflect on the day they shot that scene, and the emotional toll it left behind after the cameras stopped rolling.
