*Jailed dancehall star Vybz Kartel has been ordered to pay a $15 million fine to settle a 2009 dispute after he failed to show up for a scheduled concert.
The Jamaican rapper, real name Adidja Palmer, was booked for a concert in the Turks and Caicos Islands in, but he didn’t turn up to the venue, prompting the crowd to start rioting.
Promoter Alton Salmon filed a breach of contract lawsuit against the star, claiming he had taken a financial hit as a result of Kartel’s no-show, while his reputation had also been damaged.
A Supreme Court judge awarded Salmon $127,736 to cover the loss of profit and demanded Kartel hand over $15 million in damages.
The singer is currently behind bars on two murder charges relating to two separate incidents in Jamaica over the summer. He was granted bail for $3 million earlier this month, but has yet to post the money.
