*Actor Brian White got into a lot of trouble earlier this month when in an interview with HelloBeautiful.com, he dissed black women.
Now, the actor is clearing the air saying he never said that in an interview with Essence Magazine. He is married to a Latina woman.
ESSENCE.com: You’ve caught a lot of flack for your comments about how Black women, so we just have to ask, Brian White, do you hate Black women?
BRIAN WHITE: No, come on. I’m Black Carpenter [the title of his book and youth development program]. I’m out making sure kids have a future. I did that interview on speakerphone and my mom was in my car with me. I said the majority of what we, as a community, celebrate in the media, isn’t worthy of our women. Not the ones that I know and love. I’ve been out on the road with the UNCF, NAACP, and National Urban League doing Black Carpenter or working with little girls and boys in schools. I’m about that, more so than anything else. I’m not trying to be famous; I’m trying to make a difference. That’s all I meant to say. I apologize for any confusion.
ESSENCE.com: Why do you think the story of you hating on Black women picked up so much steam?
WHITE: I don’t know. There are probably lots of reasons, but I feel like that’s what sells. In our community, it’s very difficult to sell substance. I’ll say this: anything that can be construed as negative gets a lot of play but if it’s super positive getting actual creditable media and then that extra blogger is much harder.

I read the original interview and I think Brian’s words were taken out of context. I agree with him to an extent about those reality shows. It does display a negative image in regards to Black Women. They are delusional, crazy, materialistic and classless. That doesn’t define Black Women as a whole but the world will perceive that because these women are at the forefront of the tv/media all the time. I used to watch as a guilty pleasure but enough is enough. I no longer tolerate nor support these shows. If you complain but yet continue to watch these shows then you can’t be mad. It scares me a bit to see younger Black women glorify these women like they have really accomplished something in life when you have First Lady Michelle Obama, Mae C. Jemison, Oprah, etc. as positive examples.

I believe he does have a major problem with Black women and I’m glad he has been identified. Research those tweets he posted from his admirers and it’s clear he must agree with them. I support Tyler Perry but won’t be checking for “Good Deeds” because BW has a role in it.

LOL@Melody….well it looks like he has been cut off like Wesley Snipes and Taye Diggs. His career is on life support. LOL

Perhaps he’ll pick up a few non-Black female fans since hatred for Black women is a surefire bonding “tool” for men like BW and those women.

Does Essence hate black men?

No, Essence doesn’t hate black men. In fact, they almost seem to worship them by begging for validation and asking every black male entertainer how they feel about black women. It’s nauseating.
I agree Diva007, when I read the entire article, I didn’t get hate at all because his point was that people seem to embrace reality show stars, who fight and curse each other, more than real actresses who are talented and more refined. I think people assumed he was making a sweeping statement, and assumed he must hate black women because his wife is not black. Really, I don’t find Brian relevant and I was never really a fan, but I think he may have been misunderstood.

lol..I got you. I don’t read the mag but I’m not sure if I would agree that they “beg for validation” from black men though.

I only read the article in Essence because I wanted to get the full story. For the record, Essence is not a Black-owned publication anymore…they sold to Time-Warner some years ago. I’m not attempting to devalue the mag because they are not Black-owned but people need to know that the information and probably even its mission is not based in or from a Black perspective (you’ll have to dig deep and not rely on the surface). Again, I don’t read it so I don’t “know” but based on past information/experiences/observations it’s practical to think that – at the root of it – it’s not “for” Black women/people. LOL…[and it ain't even funny, really]…but I just thought to myself, “just what is a Black perspective these daze?” We are so divided and disjointed it’s difficult to know, imo. Back to the actor…he doesn’t seem to have a problem with Black women; I mean, why would he, it looks like he came from a Black woman. But that’s what I don’t get about us – Black men/males…we “say” we love our mother/sisters/family on one hand but we “act” like we don’t on the other. Let me just say, for the record, I LOVE Black women, period. Does it mean we don’t have a lot of issues – Black men and women, both – naw, we’ve got some straight-up problems. But it’s nothing to lose hope over – not yet – but it’s definitely something we’ve got to work through if we intend to stay in the game as a people. To work through these things we’ve got to #1 be Honest, first with ourselves as wo/men, then with each other as wo/men. It’s time-out for all the bs…clock-time is running out…fa real.

You have a right to love who you want to love – but to denounce/slander your own race is totally absurd and a slap in the face to his parents and the people that paved the way for him to have the success that he’s having at this time. I cannot believe in this day and time, people still forget the best cause to any question asked is a simple: No Comment, and or, if you decide to make a statement have a tape recorder of the interview! Celebrities can go out and purchase $2000.00 on a suit or a dress – yet they can’t purchase a tape recorder from Bestbuy for $60.00 in the event should a “misquote be released to the public or news article?

@Nestafan, I so agree and wish they wouldn’t even bring up the topic of Black men period.

Ever since Susan Taylor left Essence, the magazine is STRAIGHT garbage. She was so classy and always put women that REALLY meant something to society on the cover and the pictures and articles were always of substance. I don’t even bother reading Essence when I’m stuck in the hair salon…who really gives a damn about what this D list actor thinks anyway…its not like his movies are number one at the box office SO…don’t try and save face now…
