Celebrity Mentor Nicole Richie speaks onstage during the "Fashion Star" panel during the NBCUniversal portion of the 2012 Winter TCA Tour at The Langham Huntington Hotel and Spa on Jan. 6, 2012 in Pasadena, California

*If “The Voice” and “Project Runway” hooked up and had a baby, it would be NBC’s upcoming reality competition series “Fashion Star.” It lets viewers in on the designing element of fashion like “Runway,” but also has mentors and judges competing for the contestants’ talent, a la “The Voice.”

Premiering Tuesday, March 13 at 9:30, the show follows 14 fashion designers as they compete for the opportunity to create the next big fashion brand. Former supermodel Elle McPherson hosts, while Jessica Simpson, John Varvatos and Nicole Richie – each the owner of their own fashion lines – will serve as mentors to the contestants.

Every week, we’ll see full runway shows, and buyers from Macy’s, H&M and Saks Fifth Avenue battling each other for the fashion line of their choice. The buyer chosen by the contestant will then have the line for sale in their store the following day.

“We shot the show back in July and August, and the reason why it’s so exciting to watch is because as America is watching the clothes go down the runway, they can order it online that night or go into the store the next day,” Richie tells EURweb. “It’s so fast, it’s so immediate and it’s going to be very exciting for America to watch.”

In the audio below, Richie explains just how much of the behind-the-scenes, warts-and-all side of fashion viewers will get to see on “Fashion Star.” [Scroll down to watch the promo.]
