Monica Raymund Says Her Role on ‘HIGHTOWN’ is Edgy, Messy and Complicated

*HIGHTOWN is the STARZ network’s new drama set in Cape Cod.

Executive produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the show centers around Jackie Quiñones (Monica Raymund) a hard-partying lesbian National Marine Fisheries Service agent that is wrestling with sobriety.

Jackie has no problem flashing her gun and badge to pick up women in “P-Town,” the gay mecca of Provincetown, MA. Her hard-partying lifestyle is thrown into disarray when she discovers a body on the beach – a casualty of Cape Cod’s opioid epidemic.

Raymund was a fan favorite for seven years on the NBC drama “Chicago Fire” where she starred as Gabriela Dawson.

Her first on-air drama was the Fox show, “Lie to Me” and she also appeared on CBS’s “The Good Wife.”

Monica spoke with Jill Munroe about taking on an edgier role as Jackie, if there are plans for her to direct any episodes of “HIGHTOWN” – she recently directed the crossover episode between CBS’ FBI and NBC’s Chicago PD.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the episode became the series’ season finale – and how she’s been handling self-care during this stressful time.

What Monica loves about the character of Jackie:

She’s edgy, she’s messy. She’s a gritty character and she’s complicated. I just want to get my hands dirty sometimes, and sink my teeth into, not such a straight line in the narrative. This narrative has all kinds of twists and turns. You meet all these characters that Jackie interacts with, and through it all, she’s trying to get sober. And so, trying to get sober and beginning the road to recovery is just as compelling as the murder part of the story too.

On whether she was more into the murder mystery aspect of the script or Jackie’s story:

There are a lot of crime dramas, we see them all the time. But what makes this one special and unique is that it’s centered around this character, “Jackie Quiñones” her circumstance, her situation, her struggle through this all, for me is what is most compelling.

HIGHTOWN also stars James Badge Dale, Atkins Estimond, Shane Harper, Amaury Nolasco, Dohn Norwood and Riley Voelkel. It premieres on STARZ May 17.
