O Magazine’s Sept 2020 issue features Breonna Taylor

*For the first time ever, someone other than Oprah Winfrey will grace the cover of her monthly “O The Oprah Magazine.”

Instead, the late Breonna Taylor will appear on the cover for an issue dedicated to anti-racism. According to the magazine’s editor-in-chief, Lucy Kaylin, Winfrey and her O team began discussions about how the brand could raise awareness about police brutality against Black Americans following the death of George Floyd, who died on May 25 after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck. Taylor was fatally shot by police who stormed into her Louisville home on March 13.

This special issue, due on newsstands Aug. 11, examines systematic racism and includes lists of anti-racist actions readers can take, such as which Black-owned businesses they can support, organizations they can donate to, petitions they can sign, articles they can read and more, the release states.

The magazine’s cover image was created by 24-year-old digital artist Alexis Franklin.

Take a look at her process below.
