Najee Ali, Activists Plan to Protest Snubbing of Ava DuVernay & Others by Golden Globes

*Najee Ali is an LA-based civil rights activist and director of Project Islamic Hope. He’s also the lead organizer of the successful Oscars protests and boycotts that called for more diversity in the Academy Awards voting system. That action resulted in changes to the Academy voting rules to include more minority and women voters.

Now Ali is now targeting the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s 2020 Golden Globes nominations which were announced Monday morning (12-09-19) are being criticized by many nationwide for snubbing Ava DuVernay, Regina King, Lupita Nyong’o, and Zendaya along with a litany of female directors who weren’t nominated … once again.

DuVernay is the creator of “When The See us,” for Netflix which tells the story of Yusef Salaam, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, Korey Wise and Antron McCray … the five teens who were wrongfully convicted in 1989 rape of a woman known simply as the Central Park Jogger. DuVernay is the nation’s leading director in exposing white supremacy and exposing injustice of minorities in film.

“When They See Us,” had previously netted 15 Emmy nominations and two wins (including a victory for lead actor Jharrel Jerome).

Ali says he and a coalition of activists will be front and center on January 5, 2020 outside the Beverly Hilton Hotel on the LA/Beverly Hills border where the upcoming Golden Globes will be held.

“This has to be one of the biggest upsets for me. The Hollywood Foreign Press should really be ashamed of themselves for this one. We plan on once again protesting Hollywood which doesn’t want to acknowledge the work of deserving women directors and Africans-Americans” Our protest isn’t about DuVernay as much as it is highlighting the unfairness, hypocrisy and misogynistic voters in the Hollywood Foreign Press.” – Najee Ali: www.najeeali.com
