Adele’s ‘21’ Nears Record Set by Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’

Adele makes her arrival at the Brit Awards 2012 held at the O2 Arena in Greenwich, London. (Feb. 21, 2012)

*New day…new milestone set by Adele’s album “21.”

The set enters a 22nd week atop the Billboard 200, selling 297,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan, which means it is now the longest-running No. 1 since Prince & the Revolution’s “Purple Rain” soundtrack scored 24 weeks at No. 1 in 1984 and 1985.

This is also the ninth consecutive week for 21 at No. 1 — the most in-a-row frames at No. 1 since the “Titanic” soundtrack racked 14 straight in 1998.

“21” — released slightly more than a year ago in the United States — has now sold 7.7 million in the States. Of that figure, 1.8 million were sold in 2012.

Adele has a second album in the top 10 this week, as her first set, 19, descends 4-7 with 39,000 (down 56%).

Meanwhile, the late Whitney Houston’s Whitney: The Greatest Hits holds at No. 2 with 174,000 (down less than 1%).

As physical stock of Houston’s albums are finally reaching retail outlets, some of her older catalog sets rise on the list. “The Bodyguard” soundtrack, for one, rallies 38-6 (47,000; up 176%) while her “Whitney Houston” album motors 37-9 (30,000; up 72%). Since her death on Feb. 11, the bulk of her album sales have come from digital downloads, as most retailers didn’t have physical copies of her albums on hand.

Oh well, if it’s left up to black folk wanting to appreicate “good singing” she’ll be the most successful artist of the century…

I like her..but now Purple Rain too?

Adele is an awesome singer, plus she has the mouth of sailor (raunchy and she seems to be chilled, too)
Congrats on your success! I would love for her to do a duet with Alicia Keyes, Annie Lennox, Chaka Khan or Lisa Stansfield… it would be Incredible!!!!

  3. I love her cute face

  4. I really enjoyed her interview on 60 Minutes…she was talking about her former boyfriend that broke her heart and got married right after they broke up and you know he’s probably kicking himself in the arse right about now…LOL…she said she’s really, really happy with her current love…love her CD

I’m happy for her. It’s about time music got back to music. Not PR antics or people who get by solely on looks. It would be nice it the rest of the industry took note. She didn’t need autotune or a gimmick…just a voice and talent and out sold Beyonce, Rhianna, Britney and Lady Gaga. I’m a bit tired of having conversations about why music is bad.

You mean she outsold Beyonce/Rihanna/Brit/Lady Gaga CURRENT albums. That’s just for the now though. Beyonce/Britney/Lady Gaga careers take a HOT STEAMING DUMP on Adele’s. LOL! Mind you I don’t listen to any of the artists mentioned. People kill with the word “talent” on here. You said just a voice and talent. Isn’t her voice her talent?

    See what I mean?

And where are Joss Stone and Norah Jones lately?

I have no doubt that most black folk purchased Adele’s CD over any Lalah or Ledisi…Yet, they “yearn” for good music.
