*After her debut as ‘Precious,” Gabourey Sidibe shot to popularity with an Oscar nomination and a few other gigs in magazines, movies and shows. But she’s always been met with opposition, particularly about her weight.
The actress who continues to strut her voluptuous figure, was told to quit Hollywood due to her image.
During an interview with Andy Cohen on “Watch What Happens Live,” she revealed upon her meeting for the first time, Joan Cusak, it served as the most disappointing introduction ever.
Not only didn’t Joan know who Sidibe was, but she also advised her that she should quit show biz because it’s so image conscious.
How rude.

Excuse me!!!! Joan Cusack has a lot of nerve telling Gabby that, Joan is not exactly a raving beauty herself. yes Gabourey is a big girl but she has a fun and likable personality which is far more important, she is approachable and relatable from what I can tell when she does interviews. Yes Hollywood is image driven but I have seen several actresses and actors who are not rail thin and model like get roles in films/tv shows. Ms Cusack should of been encouraging her to build up her self esteem instead of deflating it. I see those comments did not stop Gabby. Good!!! PS> I am sure she can lose the weight if she trruly wanted to.
Some NERVE! Joan Cusack definitely ain’t the epitamy of a hollywood beauty so she needs to shut up!
And…I love Gabby on the Big C!
Well i agree with Joan a little bit Howard Stern said the same thing until she lose a TON of weight she going to always get the Mad Fat Girl role like her role in The Big C AND Precious!
Gabby is fat. Yes, a sweet girl but she is in Hollywood and being fat will not get her endorsements or any prestigious role. And, she’s a sweet girl.
Joan should have been more encouraging to Gabby but she does nerd to lose weight. She is unhealthy and there is no way around it.
She’s not fat, she’s obese. I hope for her health she loses major lbs.
As others have commented, Joan Cusack should have been more encouraging given how she doesn’t fit into Hollywood’s narrow standard of beauty herself. I’m sure Joan during the early stages of her career was told she needed to get a nose job, brow lift, and cheek and breast implants. Since she didn’t, she could have used those stories and imparted wisdom to Gabby to remain true to herself and pursue her dream against all odds.
Yes, anyone with eyes can see that Gabby is fat. But, where is it written that fat folks can’t be actors or actresses. I’m glad Gabby has a great sense of self and doesn’t allow what others think of her to deter her from her destiny.
While she may only get the ‘fat girl’ roles, bottom line is she’s working. I still think she needs to lose weight for her health which will ultimately increase the amount of roles she’s offered. However, the main thing is the sista is working.
She’s not fat, she’s obese. It’s hard to work when you are having health problems because o ypur weight. Hopefully she will get it together before she plays the role of a person in a casket.
How do you know she has health problems? You’ve been in contact with her doctor?
Never heard of Joan Cusak so I goggled her name, to me she looks like Boy George. May be she just passed along the same advice to Gabourey that someone once gave her.
As far as Gabourey weight goes, she knows that she’s a “big girl” and all the health risk associated with being grossly over weight. I encourage her to do what’s best for her and not the business, good luck Gabourey.
Hollywood don’t liked big black women….. Look at Jennifer Hudson when she was big she’s did what one movie dream girl… After she lose all that weight she’s working none stop. I hope she does lose weight 2 it help her career along way.
Your so right, hollywood does not favor large black women. I really like Gabby because she has such a beautiful spirit, but I’m also afraid that her weight will cause her health problems eventually.
LOL- As I am reading this article, a Weight Watcher ad with Jennifer Hudson scrolls by. For you Gabby!
Her pale ass needs some damn sun!! But seriously, time and her weight and look will matter so as bad as I hate to say it Gabby better do something about it if she wants to continue to work in Hollywood. It’s just the cold hard facts of the industry.
