Abused Wife ‘Stood Her Ground,’ But Still Faces 20 Years

Marissa Alexander, 31, faces 20 years in prison after shooting at her abusive husband in their Jacksonville, Florida, home. Stand Your Ground did not protect her.

*Ever since we heard about Trayvon Martin’s case there have been various similarities to his case found all over the country.

None of them were using the “Stand Your Ground’ law though. A woman is now facing 20 years because she defended herself against her abuser with a gun registered in her name.

Marissa Alexander had been abused by her husband and one day she had enough.

But when she fired a shot in their Jacksonville, Florida home, she was arrested and charged with “aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with no intent to kill.” (more…)

  1. Unfortunately the article doesn’t quite get to the whole truth. One truth, though, is that the Stand Your Ground law seems to be ‘the system’s’ way of promoting injustice…kill-at-will for some and get-killed for others.

    20yrs?!?!?! . . . . .She was trying to keep from being thumped on AGAIN along with NOT shooting her abuser, and SHE’S the bad guy??? . . . . . .sorry but, hindsight being 20/20 (no pun), bet she wished she’d shot him.

    EUR you might want to get the whole story on this. Like getting the police report or the tape of the husband on the Joe Madison radio show. This is not what it seems and there is clearly a reason why she is in jail.
