Shaunie O’Neal’s Statement Denouncing Violence On Her Show

Yet she continues to profit from it. What gives?

Shaunie O'Neal, executive producer and star of 'Basketball Wives'

*It’s a pretty safe bet for us to assume that a great number amongst our readership are fans of “Basketball Wives.”

The reality television series, starring and executive produced by Shaunie O’Neal, is full of intrigue, suspicion and down and dirty scrappin’.

The show’s ratings might lead one to believe that the public doesn’t care if a bunch of women of color act out one degrading stereotype after another for all the world to see, but one might be wrong. The show’s head mistress appears to be feeling the heat caused by all the ghetto behavior that her show has become synonymous with. Though she has managed to remain above the physical fray, O’Neal’s reps recently hit us off with a press release explaining her position on the matter.

“I’m extremely happy that Basketball Wives continues to have another successful fourth season. As the ratings have been through the roof since our season opener, fans continue to tune into the lives of Evelyn, Tami, Jennifer, Royce, Suzie and myself. As there is always controversy and indifference projected on the show, because we are all individual personalities, I always hope that people will find that as much as you may agree or disagree with the opinions, the behavior, [and] even our different taste in shoes, you are taking a look inside the lives of four complete different women. I will never say I agree with some of the behavior between my girlfriends on the show, but if we were to edit certain things out the show would be scripted and not reality,” said O’Neal via the release.

“As a woman of color with kids, I am very aware of myself, but I also have to be aware that my choices cannot be the same for everyone on the show and I have to respect that. I hope the fans feel they see a balance and know we have always been real with our stories, even though it may not always be a positive portrayal of adult women but real women nonetheless. I look forward to developing other media platforms in the future and hope that fans will continue to support.”

Though, we must admit, Ms. O’Neal has managed to keep her proverbial hands clean when it comes to all the in-fighting and backstabbing, we would be remiss if we didn’t point out the fact that she benefits nonetheless by way of being the executive producer of a popular show on VH1. Hmmm … can’t have it both ways Shaunie O’Neal. Either you’re down for the behavior of the women on the show, or you’re not.

In the meantime, if you’re still down, then tune in to “Basketball Wives” every Tuesday at 7pm eastern on VH1 for your weekly dose.

  1. Shaunie is a fool. She went on a media blitz explaining that the ladies did a lot of good despite all the fighting. Whenever there is a fight I always look at Shaunie sitting next to her boy toy laughing and looking into the camera.

  2. babycakes says:

Well!!! if what Shaunie says is true about the women doing positive things in the community etc then WHY??? not show them doing charity work, fundraisier events etc and depict them with hteir families, children instead of them going out for a drink or eating which is okay BUT!! the excessive use of PROFANITY, Gossiping and FIGHTING!!! is so Unnecessary and Tired. I realize alot of women watch the show including some of my friend s and I have watched it some but mainly I hear and see it at the salon I go to where the ladies there have it on and they LOVE to clown on Evelyn, Tami and Jennifer. Shaunie is going to continue ahving the ghetto behavior on the show just as long as the ratings are high and she continues to get her MOOLAH!!!.

  3. BlaqueBeauty888 says:

The show is full of ridiculousness now and never has anything of value to add!
It used to be entertaining but when you see the immaturity of a 40 year old jumping on tables, hood rats slapping grown women for no reason (oh her reason was Jen no longer wanted to be her friend)…whateva…and Shaunie creating these moments to set Jen up…its beyond crazy and a BAD depiction of black women period.

Most of them have children, young ladies, and the nonsense they spew across the airwaves is painful to see. The biggest fraud is Evelyn. She gets this “S” on her chest towards others but was a punk in the face of Tami. Only time she got balls when they had issues was when she was hiding behind someone that was “holding her back!!” She knows who to jump bad with & who not to!! At the end of the day…these “women” (and I use that term loosely) are…Adult ghetto bullies….nothing more and nothing less!

  4. MrUnapologetic69 says:

Shaunie is deluded. More importantly she won’t be exempt for the Karma surrounding all this. She should stop trying to convince us that these women are more than what we see because what we see is ALL THAT WE SEE! (smh)

  5. If you google Shaunie, , note that she has always had issue with the violence on BBW but she helps to instigate it by setting up Jen. Interview after interview she talk about the high ratings. She has received a huge wave of backlash via Twitter from the violence on the show. This is nothing more than damage control.

  6. missmaybell says:

I cannot see any woman going about her daily invites, then someone becomes soooo, offended by her presence, as to, a point– they slap, curse, and yell, they are going to smash her every time they see her. In addition the women use the excuse for battering you for something you said AFTER–They jumped you!! This is INSANE!!

All the disdain and disgust these women have for Jen could be easily handled by not speaking to her and directing their attention elsewhere.
Jen does not speak to them in a rude manner she is called names and is ‘tagged’ with being above it all, ‘borgeious’!

Jen does not use threats as her speaking point, she is more subdued than the rest, to her detriment—Clowns–beat-Down !!!

Shaunie, is a SHADY,woman—she is the type that stirs shyt and hides her hands. The creator of situations that her girls feel there is an ease/ability to be in a comfort zone of discord/violence.

Let the ‘SHOW’ begin is Shaunies motto!! How LOW can WE go T.I. has more decency about him then these people, yet, he is maligned as a ‘rapper’.

It makes her and some very mentally ( Ill-equipped) women a salary!

  7. timmdogg_00 says:

With her little Ninja’s creating havoc on screen, it’s time for the Master to offer a statement that she’s not down with violence? WFT!!! She may not physically hit someone, but she CONDONES it – which leads to profits – which leads to more viewers – which ultimately leads to her being offered more TV projects! Make that change and sell your soul at the same time, too! I am sure her kids are going to read somewhere on the internet under wikipedia: Shaunie O’Neal – wife of basketball great, Shaquille O’Neal, TV producer of Basketball Wives (one of the highest rated shows on the VH-1) which made a “mockery” of African American women all over the world. Show was cancelled due to outcry and the degradation of women in general. With the last episode taped before a live audience – Ms. O’Neal pocketed a cool $20.000.000 for services rendered and left a stain in the black community for selling out! Wow.. what a legacy to behold! I see this taking place… say 2015, during black history month!

    Signed – Nostrodamus!

  8. I can’t believe she tried to justify the behavior of these grown women! And the reason she keeps her hands clean is because she’s the BOSS! That’s like smacking your supervisor and expecting to keep your job! And if its SO REAL…why is Tami always complaining about the editing and how they are portrayed when something stupid goes down?? They are all idiots…but Shaunie is the smartest idiot of them all!

  9. Shaunie is so fake jen get away from them all, shaunie is not your friend you need to sue her too aand for two face man looking tami with her big out shape self she need to pray she is so two and three faces jennifer to me is the pretties of all she and keish.

  10. Ms. O’Neal’s statement isn’t worth the paper is was printed on. Perhaps she needs to do some research and study what it means to produce and actual television show, and be able to better express exactly what her program is supposed to be. She seems to be under the impression that she is doing a documentary of the lives of this women, that it is “real” and not scripted. However, it is not real and does not reflect the real lives of any of them. In fact, these women, who all suffer from the epidemic of FWS (Fame Whore Syndrom), are set up in situations of conflict like lab rats, and the results are then filmed for the entertainment of an audience. I am guilty of watching the show, having held out for a long time but finally indulging with my mother. But from the first show I saw, my constant question has been, “What is this show about? What is the point?” We don not see the actual lives of these women. We have never seen Shaunie’s home, and only glimpses of the others’. We don’t see them at work, don’t even know if they have jobs. A few claim to be involved with charities, but the only thing we see are them at so-called fundraisers held in bars and clubs where whatever the charity is plays backseat to the women arguing and fighting. In fact, each episode has a basic set up…first they women meet up in a restaurant or bar or walking in public passing gossip about who said who, then someone (usually big tongue Susie) goes back and tattles on what someone said about someone else, and then the episode builds towards its conclusion with a climatic confrontation of either a verbal smackdown and/or blows flying. This setup is present for every episode without fail. And who is responsible for that? Shaunie O’Neal and the other producers. So Ms. O’Neal, is you really want to be real, show us real. Show us all the real aspects of your lives that we read about in the media and see on Twitter, where the cast members have no problem with battling out and spilling their personal business in even more detail than your show’s setup even dares to go.

  11. this Shaunie chick is a bird-beaked, high-tech, modern day, brothel owner, just trifling enough to think we are not smart enough to realize her shenanigans.

  12. Notice how Shaunie does nothing to stop these bimbos when they start to take off their shoes , thrown wine bottles or walk across tables. She could care less about how Black women are projected on that show. All she cares about is if it will increase the ratings and therefore put another dollar in her pocket. I can see why Shag bailed on her. That show has turned into a disgrace!

  13. Ava Gabrielle-Wise says:

Reportedly there is a contract that the “Wives” cast members must sign that specifically states …. “Participant expressly assumes the risk of any physical or emotional injuries participant may suffer as a result of participant’s participation in the project.”” While most employers are trying to encourage bully-free workplaces, VH1 is encouraging the behavior and demanding that the participants of its show deal with the consequences of having bottles thrown at them or being assaulted with purses and slaps in the face.
As one author stated recently, “If there is no violence on “Basketball Wives”, there is no show. Let’s see if we can make that happen.

  14. Shaunie ! you are the executive producer of this show you call successful,by what means Shaunie, being phyically assulted, intimidated, bullied, mentally abused, and as you stand along side Tami and Evelyn and pat them on the back for bringing you all this success,do you also pat the other girls for helping you also, whats your charity and who are you a role model for!
