Since writing my book The Things I Used to do to Sneeze!: How to live an authentic life with awesome sensations, I’ve had the distinct honor of speaking with hundreds of people about what it means to them to live in their defined Land of Authenticity and Truth (LOAT) and come out of the their Land of Make Believe (LOMB).
In the beginning, it is often difficult for people to understand the difference. Many think that LOAT means speaking your mind or doing exactly what you want to do when you want to do it. Well, that’s not exactly it. For each life circumstance, we can choose to remain in LOMB or to embrace our truth in LOAT.
These conversations led me to create a new type of advice column called 1 Question & 2 Answers (1Q&2A from the Mind of Monica). Whether it’s to remain in a job, break up with a boyfriend or girlfriend, say sorry when you believe you’re right or communicate a tough message, 1Q&2A is a place to guide you to your place of truth. 1 Question & 2 Answers from the Mind of Monica is where the inquiring individual receives two answers for every one questions. The first answer reminds the individual of what the answer would be in the Land of Make Believe and the second is for living in the Land of Authenticity and Truth; a more desirable and fulfilling place.
As I watch various notable personalities and the average joe, like myself, make decisions that keep them in LOMB, it encourages me to continue the journey of assisting people to their truth. Why? Because the truth always comes out. We need only look to the gossip columns to recognize how truths are spilling out everyday. The Land of Make Believe is being assaulted by truth. Why not get ahead of the game?
As I sit here typing from a hotel room in Madrid, Spain, a country I’ve always wanted to visit, I realize to a greater extent, how critical finding our truth is. While I’m sure the people here have their own version of LOMB, I’ve found them to be deeply entrenched in their truth, which includes, tradition, generational wisdom and a yearning for community. I am encouraged by their openness to life and solutions to everyday problems, as well as their commitment to community.
I love the United States and I also recognize our limitations and our “if we don’t talk about it, it doesn’t exist” concept, which leads us directly into the LOMB. With the various reality shows, the constant advertisements for products that will “make us better”, our longing for the bling, our fascination with the famous and our own self degradation, I believe we can do better to get to LOAT.
I hope that my small contribution to LOAT, through 1Q&2Q, for those of us who seek it will prove to be worth while.
