Morgan Freeman: Obama is ‘Mixed Race,’ Not African American

*Morgan Freeman, one of President Obama’s strongest supporters, shocked an NPR interviewer this week when he said that America has yet to see its “first black president.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Freeman was trying to make a point that some people oppose Obama because of his race, when in fact, the actor argued, Obama is “mixed race” and not African-American.

“First thing that always pops into my head regarding our president,” he said “is that all of the people who are setting up this [racial] barrier for him … they just conveniently forget that Barack had a mama, and she was white — very white American, Kansas, middle of America. There was no argument about who he is or what he is. America’s first black president hasn’t arisen yet. He’s not America’s first black president, he’s America’s first mixed-race president.”

Freeman went on to criticize the GOP for reflexively and programmatically opposing Obama’s every move. The president, he said, “is being purposely, purposely thwarted by the Republican Party, who started out at the beginning of his tenure by saying, ‘We are going to do whatever is necessary to make sure that he’s only going to serve one term.’

“That means they will not cooperate with him on anything.”

  1. So what if he’s mixed race? Obama is still half Black or African American. Morgan Freeman really need to STFU. Since he has been in a inappropriate relationship with his step-granddaughter E’Dena Hines, who is 47 years his junior. I don’t even understand why Morgan is opening his mouth period. This old crusty looking ass freak and so call full bloodied African American that Morgan thinks he is and is all about would not be elected or found sitting on Obama’s toilet seat to begin with.

  2. NYCsoul says:

And Morgan’s point is??? Look, it doesn’t matter what Morgan thinks, it is what PRESIDENT OBAMA thinks about himself and HE is the one who choses to identify himself as AFRICAN AMERICAN. We all know he’s mixed but if he states that he sees himself as a black man, then what’s the problem? We are all mixed at some point but it’s what we chose to identify ourselves as. It’s his opinion but it doesn’t mean anything to the President and how he choses to call himself.

You probably have to check the actual interview to see what his point is.

Yes, we are all mixed..at some point. But that doesn’t really apply to Obama. He is mixed…as of his birth. Half white-half black. I’m not so sure that it’s about how “we” choose to identify ourselves. When you’re black, especially when you look it, you’re usually not granted the option of considering yourself anything but black. Truth be told, even “blacks” who prefer to use “mixed race” are bashed.

Obama is mixed race…really, really so. That’s just a fact.

    • It’s not what Morgan or Obama thinks. It is what white America thinks. Mixed people may delude themselves into thinking that they have the luxury of choosing who they are, but pretty soon they will get a wake up call. Ask Tiger Woods. Far lighter so called mixed people than Obama have been classified as black. The white man doesn’t make an exception, so Morgan can go on deluding himself.

First thing that always pops into my head regarding our president,” he said “is that all of the people who are setting up this [racial] barrier for him … they just conveniently forget that Barack had a mama, and she was white — very white American, Kansas, middle of America.

Yes Morgan. Good luck trying to sell that to whitey.

  3. NYCsoul says:

Mus, I understand all of that. Really, I do. But I’m not going to debate over how somebody choses to perceive or identify themselves. I’m sure Obama knows he’s mixed but he sees himself as black. That’s a fact, too. Freeman is entitled to his opinion, as I said, but at this point, it’s neither here nor there. Frankly, I care about the economy, community and health care than whether Obama is the first mixed or black President. I have more questions about where Obama stands on issues than what Freeman thinks.

    • musbdherbs says:

So do I. However, it’s not clear that Morgan cares to any great degree beyond the assumptions of those who would obviously criticize him because they think he’s criticizing the president. The ultimate “take back your black card” offense.

That’s why I mentioned that we don’t know the context of this story. It certainly doesn’t suggest tha tMorgan is any more interested in it than those of us who are commenting on the nonstory.

  4. MelodyCool says:

I have to agree with Morgan. Plus we all know Obama was also more palatable to non-Blacks because of his recent white admixture.

  5. If you have 1/18th of black blood you’re considered black. Or at least that used to be the percentage they used for us so that we as Blacks or Bi-racials Americans could not legally exercise our rights as citizens just like the White man was able to do. Bottom line is WHO CARES if the President says he’s Black?
Is there any PURE black blooded American? Obama has bigger fish to fry other than worrying about Morgan Freeman and his stupid take on Obama’s ethnicity. Find something else to make news worthy.

  6. Diva007 says:

Morgan, I think Obama is well aware that he is of bi-racial, mixed race…..so whatever and whats the point. If he chooses to associate himself with being Black then that’s his choice. If he said he was a white man, all hell would break loose from both sides. I guess he can’t win nor lose on this situation. Technically, it was rumored that 6 other men who served as President were black too. So go figure.

  7. HHCassius says:

Yep, gotta watch those kneejerk reactions to sensationalist headlines. Not a criticism of Obama or his blackness or lack thereof for Obama’s sake, but to call a spade a spade (pardon the term — WOW, I think I just racialed myself), i.e. white America didn’t do us any favors by electing him — yes, they are the voting majority — so it’s not like they’re THAT progressive that they elected a straight BLACK president, i.e. a son of the diaspora. Somewhat like Obama rightfully criticizing the term ‘post-racial’. We’ve come a long way, baby, but not THAT f!ckin far…

  8. Gayle K says:

A lot of white folks think the way Morgan does. Black people are confused and normally disown their own until they “come back”

  9. LOL!

  10. I totally understand where you are coming from and that you as well as a lot of other white folks may think the way Morgan does. However, not all Black people are confused as you elect to think and believe. Otherwise you would not be visiting sites like this to begin with. [ "disown their own until they come back"] LOL, since your really not speaking of them as a whole. Nevertheless, there’s good ol’ Aunt Jane that’s never too far, sharing the same sentiments. With certain mindset the simpletons will always prevail!
